View lessThe involvement of non-academic actors in research has become a key characteristic of sustainability studies. As part of this trend, modellers increasingly turn to Participatory Modelling to incorporate stakeholders' knowledge, perceptions, norms, and values in the development of formalized, shared representations of social-ecological systems. While stakeholder participation has been shown to have many advantages, its limits are not adequately discussed in the contemporary Participatory Modeling literature. In particular, there is a lack of engagement with insights from fields that have a long participatory research tradition, such as development studies. To address this gap, the thesis employs Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM), a widely employed form of PM, in a case study in Peru, aiming to map the socio-ecological drivers, impacts, and related adaptation strategies in the context of Harmful Algal Blooms involving diverse groups of local stakeholders. Subsequently, the thesis critically reflects on the participatory knowledge production process, drawing on sociology and development studies literature. By identifying and discussing the limitations of the participatory approach within this specific case study, the thesis aims to contribute to the development of best practices specific to FCM.
View lessGiovanni Pontano (1426–1503) was one of the most prominent poets of neo-latin erotic poetry. Focilla is a female character of his late work 'Hendecasyllables' or 'Baiae' whom he dedicated 10 poems to. This work analyses her devices of agency and power by applying a close-reading approach. Each of the ten poems is summarized, analyzed in form and style and interpreted. Following this, the poems are put in context with each other and references to other poems are investigated. Finally, a biographical perspective is taken for a critical interpretation of Focilla's character under additional aspects.
View lessFree logics are a family of logics that are free of any existential assumptions. This family can roughly be divided into positive, negative, neutral and supervaluational free logic whose semantics differ in the way how nondenoting terms are treated. While there has been remarkable work done concerning the definition of free first-order logic, free higher-order logic has not been addressed thoroughly so far. The purpose of this thesis is, firstly, to give a notion and definition of free higher-order logic based on simple type theory and, secondly, to propose faithful shallow semantical embeddings of free higher-order logic into classical higher order logic found on this definition. Such embeddings can then effectively be utilized to enable the application of powerful state-of-the-art higher-order interactive and automated theorem provers for the formalization and verification and also the further development of increasingly important free logical theories.
View lessAutomated theorem proving (ATP) has long been a significant field in computer science, aiming to develop algorithms for finding formal proofs automatically. With the advent of proof assistants in mathematical research and, more generally, formal methods, these systems will become increasingly relevant for mathematicans, too. Over the years, researchers have explored various approaches to tackle the inherent challenges of ATP, resulting in two paradigms being heavily researched currently: Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) solving and Machine Learning (ML)....
View lessBased on ethnographic research, this thesis analyses the lives of women living with complex forms of trauma and their experiences of the feeling-facilitating practices of Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) in Berlin. Positioning the research in psychological anthropology, the author investigates affected and marginalized perspectives by firstly, asking what women living with trauma experience in TCTSY settings, and how their actions of feeling and making choices are initiated and sustained. Secondly, by scrutinising the question of what can be learned from TCTSY and participants’ experiences regarding their everyday life with trauma more generally. The thesis enquires into healing practices and expert discourses and zeroes in on questions such as how far an ethnographic analysis of TCTSY can influence or alter dominant understandings of trauma and trauma healing. The author argues for an understanding of trauma which is more rooted in the experiences of trauma survivors and proposes the approach of “trauma-as-ongoing-lived-experience-in-context”. Moreover, the detailed analysis of the TCTSY practice and spatial emplacement as fluid and dynamic affective arrangement that considers socialities, affects, subjectivities, spaces and the arrangement of objects and feelings within them, gives indications of what healing and empowering contexts can look like in the wake of (complex) trauma.
View lessThis work investigates multispecies dwelling arrangements in an abattoir (slaughterhouse) in central Nigeria. The abattoir space, surrounded by dense settlement, comprises a slaughterhouse, slaughter slap, a lairage for small and big ruminants, markets, a mosque, prayer rooms, and other service points. Humans and their farmed species are not the only ones occupying the space. They are joined by many semi-domestic and wild animal-others – from dogs to rodents, cats and lizards, mosquitoes, flies, and many more. The multispecies inhabitants of the abattoir make different use of what they find in constant dynamic renegotiation with the other co-dwellers, materials and outside influences. Countless microorganisms populate these bodies, fluids, open soil, the concrete of the kill floor, air, and other materials. Thus, pathogenic infection, transmission, disease and health are embedded in this complex web of living arrangements. To shed light on these shifting socialities and their potential consequences, I adopt a comparatively novel analytical framework to investigate an abattoir, adding new perspectives to a large body of literature on the global meat industry. Through the utilisation of the dwelling perspective and by leaning on Tim Ingold’s meshwork-thinking, I approach the abattoir in a multispecies way in which no entity is distinct by itself. I show that, even though meshwork-thinking is rather phenomenological and offers little prescribed methodology, it gives tools to investigate open-ended and emergent entanglement in the texture of this lifeworld. In three comprehensive chapters, I address the central research question of what multispecies co-habitation in this abattoir can mean and how people and other species affect and relate to one another along meshwork traces from different angles. As part of that, I explore different temporalities, proximities, and specificities in moving entanglements of species with each other, the dwelt community of the abattoir, and interconnecting forces within shared space. I highlight that all cannot be separated and that action, knowledge, emotion, practice and perception emerge out of entanglement in close co-habitation. Furthermore, this thesis illustrates the dynamic, non-linear and perpetually evolving nature of these processes, which react to social, political, economic, temporal and environmental forces like the daily circle and the seasons.
View lessThe Yemeni novel has historically been difficult to define. Up to 1927, Yemeni literature consisted largely of poetry and short stories. Poetry and folk song poems in the south and north of Yemen greatly attracted attention of Yemeni and Arabic writers as well as readers, and many collections of poems were published. Due to factors ranging from the scarcity of publishing houses to their limited commercial capacity, however, the Yemeni novel took a relatively long time to establish itself. The Researcher Sabry Muslim proposes that Yemeni novels are actually unknown to the Arab reader and even to the Yemeni reader, noting that most Yemeni novelists write outside of Yemen. Similarly, the writer Ibrahim Abu Talib suggests that if we tried to count the number of Yemeni novels published before 2000, there are less than one hundred. Scholars also disagree on which novel is the first Yemeni novel. Although the Yemeni writer Ahmed Abdullah Al-Saqqaf published his novel Fatāt Qarut in 1927, critics including Hisham Ali, Amna Yusef, and Ibrahim Abu Talib, discount it in their studies or in articles because it was published outside Yemen. Instead, they believe that the novel, Said by Muhammad Ali Luqman, is the first Yemeni novel on the pretext that it was published in 1939 in Yemen. Indeed, many early twentieth-century works of literary history claim that Yemeni authors have no distinct tradition of the novel. Academics deny the existence of the novel in Yemen, to the point of claiming that Yemeni culture and style of life was not ready for the potential of fictional creation. The writer and critic Muhammad Nasser Sheraa agrees, writing that, “The genre of novelist creativity in Yemen has taken a modest path since its inception in the year 1939 until now, if we consider the novel Said by the Muhammad Ali Luqman as the beginning of the track.” Half a century later, it is clear that these ideas have been based on lack of research and rigorous thinking. This thesis takes a purposefully broad view of the Yemeni novel, reading three influential early novels by Yemeni writers working inside and outside Yemen to identify key features of the twentieth-century Yemeni novel. These novels, which I selected for their publication chronology, as well as their diversity topics and narrative techniques, are Fatāt Qarut (1927), Al-Rahīna (1984), and Al-Malika al-Maghdūra (1998). Previous studies such as Abdulhakim Baqees’s Fatāt Qarut and Pioneering the Marginalized Novel. Criticism of Society and the Relationship with the Other debate the Yemeni novel’s origins and focus on statistics about the number of published novels, the factors that contributed to their dissemination, and the topics discussed. By contrast, my thesis analyzes the novels themselves to show how authors deploy novelistic techniques to address key political, economic, and social developments in twentieth-century Yemeni life. Additionally, this thesis highlights the diversity of Yemeni novels by examining how their content and narrative structure develop during the Twentieth Century.

View lessFew of the so-called traditional donors can look back on equally long-lasting spending activities as the People’s Republic of China. Yet, profound academic interest for Chinese development assistance has only aroused in the 2000s when the country has significantly augmented its aid volumes directed towards developing countries, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. As Chinese aid considerably differs from traditional patterns, it has often been subject to harsh Western criticism. But does Chinese aid truly damage state-society relations in host countries? Foreign aid, in general, has repeatedly been suspected of eroding the fiscal contract and undermining state legitimacy in recipient countries as it substitutes the state in one of its most fundamental duties, the provision of public services. In recent times, the academic debate has changed, drawing a more innoxious image of the role of international donors in this respect. Using georeferenced data of Chinese aid projects and matching it with a pan-African survey, in this study, I examine the impact of an exposure to Chinese aid on Sub-Saharan African citizens’ legitimating beliefs and find a moderately positive but statistically significant causal effect. Beyond this, I explore heterogenous effects across different macro-contexts and aid-targeted sectors. By contrasting my results with the impact of World Bank aid projects, I find evidence for a China-induced rather than aid-induced effect. Potential mechanisms that could drive the results appear to be ambiguous.
View lessThe grain-scale mechanisms of hydration of mafic lower crustal rocks are investigated through partially amphibolitized samples from the Hustad Igneous Complex in the Western Gneiss Region, Norway. Chemical maps were obtained on continuous rock sections of 20 cm by 2 cm and supplemented with EMP point measurements. Numerical models are employed to reproduce reactive fluid flow driven by a fluid pressure gradient. The Proterozoic pyroxenite body and dolerite dike show different responses to the exposure to hydrous fluids along fractures formed during late Caledonian extension and exhumation. While the dolerite reaches full amphibolitization in a cm-scale reaction halo with a dm-scale transition zone, the pyroxenite has experienced previous metamorphism and is less affected by this event. Dissolution precipitation reactions and slightly faster grain boundary assisted flow are identified as the main mechanisms of fluid flow through the rock and limited element mobility is documented by grain scale chemical gradients in forming amphibole. Phase diagram calculations yield a P/T-window between 650 – 730°C and 0.4 – 0.6 GPa for amphibolite formation. 1D numerical models of reactive fluid flow driven by a fluid pressure gradient show the reaction and reproduce differences in front propagation speed between the two lithologies as observed in the samples. A simple 2D model is employed to demonstrate that the gradual transition from dolerite to amphibolite can be achieved by implementing higher permeability along grain boundaries, supported by the observation that flow along boundaries continues before individual grains are fully replaced.
