Within this work a variety of solvates of thermolabile selenium dicyanide difluoride were synthesized, crystallized and their structures have been analyzed. The solid state structures of the adducts with propionitrile, 18-crown-6, 12-crown-4 and bis(ethyleneglycol)dimethylether could be compared and interpreted by determining single crystal x-ray diffraction. It appeared, that the ψ-trigonal bipyramidal molecular structure of the selenium dicyanide difluoride is only poorly influenced by the coordination of different donor molecules. Heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy at low temperature indicates increasing selenium-bond strengths due to coordination. The intermolecular decomposition of selenium dicyanide difluoride was investigated. It proceeds via formation and subsequent decomposition of selenium tricyanide fluoride by elimination of cyanogen fluoride that in situ forms trifluoromethylseleniumdifluoride. This was unknown in the literature until now and could be characterized thoroughly with NMR spectroscopy. It is recently the third known example of a iminoselenium difluoride compound. Solvates of the decomposition product selenium dicyanide are discussed and classified within the σ-hole concept. The reaction of selenium tetrafluoride with trimethylsilyl isocyanate was investigated and the mono substituted compound selenium trifluoride isocyanate NMR spectroscopally verified. The known instability of selenium isocyanate compounds due to polymerization could be confirmed.
