The Cluster of Excellence 2020 'Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective' (EXC 2020) at Freie Universität Berlin aims to create a new theoretical and methodological take on literature in a global perspective that moves beyond the categories of nation and period and conceives of literature instead as a transcultural and transtemporal phenomenon in deep time.
Based on the insight that literature is a fundamentally performative and intermedial phenomenon, a form of social action taking place in complex networks of human and non-human actors, the Cluster studies how literature becomes global through its temporal entanglements. Introducing the notion of 'temporal communities', the Cluster investigates the ways in which literature reaches out through space and time and establishes extensive transtemporal networks in which the notion of literature itself is constantly re-constituted as it interacts with other arts and media.
This section of the Refubium ensures the long-term preservation of the Cluster's Open Access publications. This includes the EXC 2020 series con·stel·la·tions as well as the journal Bildbruch. The Cluster itself ensures the long-term preservation of its digital journal Articulations.

Beginning in the late 1960s, the Argentinian conceptual artist Mirtha Dermisache (1940–2012) produced publications that consist of asemic writing: marks that resemble language but lack semantic content. Her artist’s books, letters and postcards challenge habitual responses to both art and literature, leading us to re-evaluate how language works, how we perceive it, and how it might be distinguished from drawing. This publication brings together three academic essays and an artist’s tribute, each offering a distinct approach to “reading” Mirtha Dermisache.
View less"Illegibilities Reflecting Reading" sounds out the multifaceted practices and effects of reading by focusing on reading from its absolute limit. The illegible exposes, albeit in the negative, the promise of writing to communicate, and makes reading as an aesthetic and semiotic practice accessible to reflection in a particular way. Just as reading can imply a wide range of processes, illegibility unfolds as a spectrum of failed or only partially successful decoding operations. The experience of illegibility as an unfulfilled expectation includes, for example, the fundamental unreadability of asemic graphisms, the potentially defeasible illegibility of coded texts, texts in unlearned sign systems or defaced writing, and the incomprehensibility of readable texts. By engaging with the fringes and margins of reading, the essays assembled in this volume address the practice not only as an automatic process of deciphering signs, of searching for and assigning meaning – they specifically highlight those moments when reading becomes self-referential in sensory perception, performative, experimental, transgressive or political. Reading is investigated as an embodied interaction with textual artefacts, as a basis for collective performance or as a practice of attention, and as the privileged and exclusionary mode of Western epistemology. It is addressed in its intimate relationship with writing, and questioned as a metaphor for understanding and interpreting the world.

Zwischen dem Artikel „Weiblichkeit“ und dem Artikel „Werk“ fehlt in den von Karlheinz Barck et al. herausgegebenen Ästhetischen Grundbegriffen eine „Welt“. Und im Reallexikon der deutschen Literaturwissenschaft gibt es zwar das „weltliche Spiel“, die „Weltliteratur“ und – direkt vor dem „Werbetext“ – das „Welttheater“, nicht aber die „Welt“ selbst, noch nicht einmal eine mögliche. Dieses Fehlen, die Lücke im Lexikon ästhetischer und literaturwissenschaftlicher Grundbegriffe, lässt sich als manifester Ausdruck eines epistemologischen Mangels lesen: In ihm begegnet einem gleichsam die sichtbare Leerstelle, die die kantische Erkenntniskritik in den Enzyklopädien der Moderne hinterlassen hat, indem sie das Ganze der Welt ins unerreichbare Außerhalb der menschlichen Erkenntnisfähigkeit rückte.
