In an interdisciplinary empirical project, it was investigated in cross-
cultural comparison of Germany and South Korea when and how children during
the age of three to five years acquire words and sentence-level expressions
for ‚internal states‘ (ranging from body states and sensual perceptions over
desires, feelings, social emotions, or norms to terms of thought, knowledge,
and reality), and how this specific domain of language acquisition interacts
with the development of a conceptual understanding of intentions, emotions,
and cognitive states of self and others. The project combines methods,
concepts, and perspectives of a variety of fields of investigation in
linguistics and psychology – e.g., classical language acquisition studies of
lexicon and grammar, ‘theory of mind’ research, emotional development
research, or cross-cultural psychology. Data were collected from 162 children
– 64 German, 62 Korean – in different kindergartens in each country. ‘Internal
state language’ was assessed with parent questionnaires on the usage of
specific words and constructions, and children’s narrations of a wordless
picture book with a socio-emotional story. Internal state understanding was
covered by a battery of classical ‘theory of mind’ tests and a structured
interview on emotion understanding. Both in the linguistic and the cognitive
measures, robust sequences were found that point to possibly universal steps
in development marked by increasing abstractness and complexity of the
concepts or skills involved. However, the temporal dynamics of progression
between common steps as well as the contents or foci of children’s
representations seem to be influenced by linguistic and cultural specifics.
Differences between the German independent and Korean interdependent social
orientation were, for example, manifest in the acquisition point of social
vocabulary, children’s construal of depicted scenes in their narrations, and
in their response patterns in the emotion interview. While in both groups the
use of complex internal state language constructions (such that meaningfully
relate or contrast an internal state to a second state of affairs) showed a
positive influence on some measures of internal state understanding, the fact
that Korean children passed specific ‘theory of mind’ questions at a later age
than their German counterparts could be related to a more transparent
patterning of mental verb semantics, complement constructions and the
representations required for these questions for German as compared to Korean,
probably helping German children to map linguistic and conceptual
representations more readily in these specific tasks. In summary, while all
children acquire a representational knowledge of internal states and related
complex reflexive abilities in the preschool years, this development is guided
and modulated by the conceptions of persons and minds, the available
linguistic means, expression norms and interactive experiences in their
specific ‘community of minds’. This points out the importance of cross-
linguistic and cross-cultural approaches in the study of cognitive development
in order to reach a more accurate picture of universals and the factors
accounting for differences.

und Syntax, ‚Theory of Mind‘-Forschung, Emotionale Entwicklungsforschung,
kulturvergleichende Psychologie. Es wurden Daten von 162 Kindern – 64
deutschen, 62 koreanischen – in verschiedenen Kindergärten in beiden Ländern
erhoben.
spezifischen ‚Community of Minds‘ moduliert.
