Abstract

In Latin America the relationship between praxis, objects, and archaeological sites is shaped by dynamic political contexts. The proliferation of transnational interests and the deepening of neo- and endocolonial networks along with the emergence of social and indigenous movements call into question conceptions of the indigenous past based on Enlightenment thought as well as the role of archaeology. Since mining and the tourism industry dominate global discussions concerning archaeology and development, the emphasis in this essay will be on local alternatives in the realm of agricultural development, which draw together archaeological and indigenous knowledge.
