In
selbstorganisierenden Monolagen (Self-Assembled-Monolayers, SAMs) dienen
In Monolagen physisorbierten Tetra-
tert-Butyl-Azobenzols (TBA) auf Au(111) wird der Abstand zwischen Chromophor
und Oberfläche durch vier tert-Butyl-Substituenten hergestellt. TBA adsorbiert

Upon exposure to UV/vis light the azobenzene molecule interchanges reversibly
between its trans- and its cis-isomer. The bistable switch is a promising
canditate for the functionalization of surfaces. Yet, the adsorption on a
substrate can lead to a partial or even complete loss of the molecule’s
ability to isomerize. The aim of this thesis is to characterize the charge and
energy transfer among neighbouring azobenzene derivatives as well as between
the molecules and Au(111) surface. Furthermore the effect of these
interactions on the switching function is evaluated. For self-assembled
monolayers (SAMs) alkanethiol entities serve as spacer groups, as well as
anchors to the substrate. The azobenzene entity adopts its trans-form when
adsorbed on the surface. The tilt angle of its π-plane is 15 ± 10° with
respect to the surface normal. The azo-bridge, i. e. the axis between the two
nitrogen atoms, is aligned nearly parallel to the surface plane. The tilt
angle of the main molecular axis towards the surface normal is calculated to
be 30°. Using these three angles the orientation of the chromophore is
completely specified. The excitonic-dipole model allows for a precise
simulation of the observed energetic shifts between the UV/vis-absorption
bands in SAMs and those of azobenzene solutions. The shifts derive from
excitonic coupling between neighbouring chromophores in the moment of
excitation. They can be translated into a spatial diffusion of the optical
excitation on a time scale of femtoseconds, which presumably lowers the
ability of azobenzene SAMs to photo-isomerize. Analyzing the autoionization
spectra via the core-hole-clock-technique reveals the dynamics of the core-
excited electrons. The tunneling from the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals
(LUMOs) of the chromophore into the substrate occurs within a few ten
femtoseconds, if the molecular alkane substituent contains six methylene units
or less. This fast deexcitation process might also hinder the azobenzene
switching in SAMs. In monolayers of physisorbed tetra-tert-butylazobenzene
(TBA) the necessary distance between chromophore and substrate is provided by
four bulky tert-butyl substituents. On the Au(111)-substrate the TBA molecule
adopts its trans-form with the planes of the phenyl rings being aligned
parallel to the surface. Autoionization measurements prove that there is
hybridization between the tert-butyl substituents of TBA and the metallic
substrate. The isomerization of the adsorbed TBA leads to a blue shift of the
N1s-LUMO-resonance. The shift is used to calculate the fraction of switched
molecules to 53 ± 5%. For the cis-TBA the nitrogen bridge and two tert-butyl
legs of the first phenyl ring contact the substrate. The second phenyl ring is
oriented nearly perpendicular to the surface. Analysis of the autoionization
of the N1s-LUMO+3 resonance of the trans-TBA shows strong evidence for a
charge transfer between adsorbate and substrate that takes a few 10 fs, only.
