dc.description.abstract
Most of entrepreneurship research has tried to answer the question: What makes
some new firms succeed and others fail? Plenty of answers have been found: the
entrepreneurs' personality, the quality of his business model, the structure
of the management team, the planning, the strategy, the supportive
environment. Problems arise as each entrepreneurial process contains
individual, dynamic and path dependent elements and thus can hardly be modeled
or condensed to a persuasive theory. Furthermore, there obviously are many
often blurred variables that make up for a success or failure of a new
venture.
The developed theoretical framework is based on the evaluation and
interpretation of the very extensive and voluminous empirical work published
in the entrepreneurship field in the United States and Germany until 2002. It
includes the results of many different approaches (Traits-Approach, Behavioral
Approach, Environmental Approach, etc.). Out of the vast amount of empirical
work, 16 success factors are deducted that appear to have an effect on new
venture performance. These are: 1. a demographic factor (being white and
male), 2. certain personality traits (creativity, intuition, nAch, initiative,
ambition, ability of calculating risks, positive energy, people skills and
some others), 3. human capital consisting of experience, skills and education,
4. a refined business model, 5. the existence of a team and the size,
education and experience of the team members, 6. the entrepreneurial behavior,
7. the use of network and professional help, 8. the reasonable financing, 9. a
market-oriented niche-strategy, good marketing and sufficient planning, 10. a
flexible but professional structure, 11. a positive micro-social climate, 12.
the existence of market opportunities, 13. a culture enhancing
entrepreneurship and a positive economic situation, 14. a location where
clusters and networks can develop or are developed, 15. the corporate
surrounding, 16. conducive regulative and economic policy.
These variables are put together in a comprehensive model that 1. explains
performance as the main variable in its financial and non-financial form, 2.
refers to and combines a variety of different interdisciplinary theories, 3.
takes into consideration the relevant success factors found in empirical
research according to their intensity of influence; 4. introduces different
dimensions, 5. implements the complexity of the entrepreneurial process by
considering dynamics and repercussions, and 6. includes stochastical factors.
The developed model is aimed at an improvement of the theoretical base of
entrepreneurial success-factor research and can be used for the improvement of
governmental policies and business education.
