Mit regionalen Klimamodellen (RCMs) werden hochaufgelöste Simulationen innerhalb eines begrenzten Modellgebiets durchgeführt. Dazu werden am Modellrand gröber aufgelösten Antriebsdaten, z. B. Simulationen globaler Klimamodelle (GCMs), vorgeschrieben. So fügen RCMs den Antriebsdaten kleinerskalige Details hinzu, die im antreibenden Modell nicht enthalten sind. Es kommt aber auch zu großskaligen Abweichungen zwischen RCM und Antriebsdaten. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die ursächlichen Mechanismen großskaliger Zirkulationsanomalien in RCMs deren Wechselwirkungen mit dem Modellrand zu untersuchen. Dazu werden RCM-Simulationen mit dem CCLM über Europa analysiert, die mit einer GCM-Simulation mit dem ECHAM5 angetrieben wurde. Die RCM-Felder werden formal in einen primären und einen sekundären Anteil aufgespalten, wobei ersterer den Antriebsdaten und letzterer den Abweichung des RCM davon entspricht. In den klimatologischen Mitteln zeigt sich im RCM eine großskalige Zirkulation relativ zu den Antriebsdaten, die als Sekundärzirkulation (SZ) bezeichnet wird. Die Durchführung einer Clusteranalse ergibt im Winter eine starke Abhängigkeit der SZ von der großskaligen Strömungssituation im Modellgebiet. Stromabwärts der Alpen bildet sich ein relativ stationärer antizyklonaler Sekundärwirbel, der durch auflösungsbedingte Unterschiede der orographischen Effekte im RCM und GCM erzeugt wird. Innerhalb von Trögen in den Feldern der geopotentiellen Höhe bilden sich zyklonale Sekundärwirbel, die sich synchron mit den Trögen verlagern. Am Modellrand des RCMs treten Sekundärströmungen, die parallel zum Modellrand verlaufen. Im Sommer zeigt sich ein persistenter antizyklonaler Sekundärwirbel im Modellgebiet, der weitestgehend unabhängig von der großskaligen Strömung ist. Es gibt Hinweise darauf, dass die Etesien zur Entstehung dieses Wirbels beitragen. Allgemein kann die SZ als eine Art Ausgleichsströmung interpretiert werden. Modifikationen der durch die Antriebsdaten vorgeschriebenen Massenflüsse innerhalb des RCMs können das Modellgebiet auf Grund der vorgeschriebenen Randbedingungen nicht verlassen und müssen innerhalb des Modellgebiets ausgeglichen werden. Die räumliche Ausdehnung der Sekundärwirbel wird durch die Modellränder begrenzt. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Eigenschaften der Sekundärwirbel stark von der Lage der Modellränder abhängen, wobei sich sowohl Größe als auch Amplitude der Wirbel im gesamten Modellgebiet verändern. Eine Verringerung der horizontalen Auflösungen des CCLMs und ebenso die Anwendung von Spectral Nudging führt zu einer Abschwächung der SZ. Auf Grund der ursächlichen Mechanismen kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass die SZ in allen RCMs auftritt, die nach dem Verfahren des One-Way-Nestings betrieben werden. Die SZ wirkt sich sowohl auf die vertikale Druck- und Temperaturverteilung, als auch auf den Niederschlag und die Wolkenbedeckung aus. Die Berücksichtigung der SZ unter Einbeziehung der großskaligen Strömungssituation bei der Evaluierung von RCMs ist zu empfehlen, um mögliche systematische Fehler in den Modellen aufzudecken.
Regional climate models (RCMs) are used to add smaller scales to coarser resolved driving data, e. g. from global climate models (GCMs), by using a higher resolution on a limited domain. However, RCMs do not only add scales which are not resolved by the driving model but also deviate from the driving data on larger scales. Thus, RCMs are able to improve the large scales prescribed by the driving data. However, large scale deviations can also lead to instabilities at the model boundaries. A systematic analysis of large scale deviations between RCMs and the driving data, in particular regarding the impact of orography and the interactions with the model boundaries, is missing in the literature. The aim of this work is to study the driving mechanisms of large scale circulation anomalies in RCMs. RCM simulations with the CCLM over Europe, forced with an ECHAM5 GCM simulation, are analysed. The RCM wind fields are interpreted as the sum of a primary and a secondary circulation (SC), with the former being equivalent to the GCM fields and the latter representing the differences between RCM and GCM. The climatological fields show large-scale vortices in the SC fields. A cluster analysis shows that in winter the SC depends strongly on the large scale flow conditions within the RCM domain. Relatively stationary anticyclonic secondary vortices form downstream of the Alps. They are caused by mass flux differences due to different orographic effects in the RCM and GCM. Cyclonic secondary vortices and associated negative geopotential height (GPH) anomalies occur within troughs of the GPH field and move at the same speed through the domain. At the RCM boundary strong currents occur in the SC field parallel to the boundary. In summer the SC shows a persistent anticyclonic secondary vortex, which is basically independent of the large scale flow conditions. There are strong hints that this persistence is due to the etesian winds, which are accelerated in the RCM when crossing the Turkish highlands, modifying the flow in the whole vertical column of the troposphere. The SC can be interpreted as a balancing flow. Modifications of the mass flux, which are caused in the RCM e. g. due to different orographic forcings, cannot exit the RCM domain due to the prescribed lateral boundary conditions. Instead the mass fluxes have to be balanced within the RCM domain forming closed secondary vortices. The SC strongly depends on the position of the lateral boundaries. If the boundaries are relocated, the SC is modified within the whole RCM domain. A reduction of the horizontal resolution, as well as the application of the spectral nudging technique lead to a weakening of the SC. The underlying mechanisms suggest that the SC can be regarded as a common feature of one-way nested RCMs with prescribed inflow and outflow conditions. Since the SC also affects the pressure and temperature profiles, it has the potential to produce systematic large-scale biases in RCMs. The consideration of the SC in the process of RCM evaluation is highly recommended.
