The present dissertation describes the use of teachers of the performance feedback in the project BeLesen (The Berlin Longitudinal studies on the Development of Reading Competence of Primary School Children with Immigrant Backgrounds). For that purpose, a questionnaire study and an interview study were implemented; both of which were based on the cyclical model: Von der Evaluation zur Innovation by Helmke & Hosenfeld (2005). Moreover, the feedback format for BeLesen was compared with three different Swiss formats for School Assessment and performance feedback (Check 5, Orientation work, and Class Cockpit) in order to determine whether the composition of the performance feedback could be optimized. The assumption underlying the concept of performance feedback, namely that the provision of information on student achievement will lead to an improvement in the quality of teaching or effectiveness of the school, is the theoretical focal point of this dissertation and is discussed using the acquired data. The object of the explorative and descriptive studies was to find out how the teacher would handle the performance feedback (attitude of the teachers toward performance feedback, comprehension and utilization of the feedback information). Results: Various factors are relevant for the handling of the performance feedback, for example: the composition, layout and structure of the format, communication of the goal, comprehension of the information, and individual attitude toward the performance feedback. The acceptance of the performance feedback was considered to be high. The teachers stated that they found the feedback information comprehensible. The more specific the information was related to a particular student, the more, it was intensely received by the teachers. Although the information was generally accepted, the results were not regarded as correct, and therefore also not as informative, if the teachers had the impression that the curricular validity of the preceding tests had not been attained. Often there was not enough time and/or the willingness to reflect thoroughly on the results and hence, deduce a consistent, structured action from them. If data-based-education is to be achieved, the performance feedback must contain valid and reliable information, which must be processed in a target-group-specific way. This includes, among other things, that the performance feedback should be referred back to the respective group to be influenced or to the specific context (e.g. teachers receiving student data, the school administration receiving data relevant to school type.
