dc.description.abstract
This work is a theoretical study of nonlinear optical phenomena with ultra-
broadband radiation. For the description of these processes the standard
method of nonlinear optics based on the slowly varying envelope approximation
and Taylor expansion for the refractive index can not be applied. Here a
generalized theoretical approach without these approximations is developed and
used for the study of some interesting physical problems such as the
generation of supercontinua in photonic crystal and hollow fibers. Photonic
crystal fibers (PCF's) are novel optical elements with peculiar linear and
nonlinear properties. The ultrabroadband radiation, which arises in photonic
crystal fibers from low-intensity pulses, was already used for exciting
applications as e.g. frequency metrology. However, no theoretical explanation
for the physical reasons of this unusually broad spectrum was given so far. In
this work, supercontinuum generation is shown to be caused by a novel
mechanism of spectral broadening through fission of higher-order solitons into
redshifted fundamental solitons and blueshifted phase-matched nonsolitonic
radiation. It is shown that this process is more effective for longer pulses
than for shorter ones, which is in direct contrast with other spectral
broadening mechanisms. This property can be used as evidence for this
mechanism in experimental observations. The soliton dynamics is studied, and
compared with experiments which show good agreement with the present theory.
Four-wave mixing plays an important role as another nonlinear process in
PCF's. Its peculiarities are also investigated here. It is shown that phase-
matching of degenerate four-wave mixing can be achieved in an extremely broad
frequency range reaching from IR to UV. Spontaneous generation of new
frequency components and parametric amplification by four-wave mixing as well
as possible overlap of this generation with soliton fission are studied in
detail. In addition, phase compensation and ultrashort pulse generation are
studied in the case of the propagation of intense pulses through a gas-filled
hollow fiber, in which a novel ultrawide self-phase-modulation-induced
spectral-broadening regime is predicted with spectra covering almost 3 octaves
for a optimized pressure.

ultrabreiter Strahlung theoretisch untersucht.
Frequenzmetrologie.
ueberdeckt.
