The aim of this study was to determine, whether the Toothguide-Trainer and the
Toothguide-Training-Box based on the 3D-Master-Toothguide are useful to
increase the ability to discriminate tooth color differences. Despite the
application of various color discrimination scales, there are again and again
problems with integrating dental prothesis because of color discrepancies.
Almost none of the training programs for dentists or dental auxiliaries, offer
deucational assistance or concepts that adress these problems. The first
educational structures are the Toothguide-Trainer, a software that works like
a computer game; the Toothguide-Training-Box, a hardware, matching to the
software program, developed by H.A.JAKSTAT. 77 students from the Dental Clinic
South of the Charité participated in the study. After randomisation, the
students were divided into a study and a control group. The Lanthony,
Farnsworth and Ishihara test were used to exclude color defect subjects. The
study group used the Toothguide-Trainer and the Toothguide-Training-Box to
practice color discrimination, the control group underwent practical training
using sample teeth. Then the study and the control group performed an
examination with a female patient who was fitted with a duplicate maxillary
prothesis, in which teeth 15 to 25 were replaced with defined 3D-Master teeth.
Both groups determined the color of the teeth in the patient mouth with the
aid of the 3D-Master and the Vitapan-Classical colour scales of the Vita
Dental Company. The study group compromised 29 and the control group 48
subjects. A comparison of 1) the difference between total 3D (lightness,
intensity, color) and the actual tooth color and 2) the difference between the
actual tooth color compared with the lightness as well as 3) the number of
absolute accurate identifications of the tooth color yielded the following
results: For 1) and 2): The Mann-Whitney-Test revealed a highly significant
difference between the two groups, p< 0,001. For 3): There were 63 absolute
accurate identifications in the study group and 48 in the control group. The
accuracy rate for determine the tooth colour with the Vitapan-Classical-System
was only slightly higher than with the 3D-Master-System.
