"Utopian writing" is used as terminus technicus for "utopian literary writing". My basic thesis is: Volker Braun writes utopian. The enquiry will be made in three steps: 1. Utopian thinking. The first step is to untertake a historical and literary historical review of the theme. Such a review makes it clear that Braun's way of writing poetry cannot be fully defined in terms of utopian thinking. - 2. Utopian writing. The second step carries out a philosophical-conceptional definition of utopian writing. A concept of utopian reasoning can be developed with the help of the critical subjectivist approach. It shows, how an utopian attitude is possible as a rational and legitimate creative will for improvement. Then I discuss the specific status of literary texts. The results enable us to criticize deficient views (like the "Vorschein" - aesthetics of Ernst Bloch) and in conclusion to formulate terms for the aesthetics of production and reception of utopian writing. Now the suggested definition is embedded in a concept of aesthetic reasoning, giving reason for the constructive character of interpretation, conducting the aesthetic perception and helping to determine a well-crafted text. - 3. Aesthetic reasoning. In order to secure a controlled application of the concept of aesthetic reasoning, the third step is focussed on the analysis of a single text of Volker Braun. The choice depends on the drama "Dmitri" (1980). It is one of the first important plays of the author and owns an unrecognized high rank for his complete works. Because of the lack of content utopian elements, it is highly suitable for demonstrating the advantage of the new terminological destinctions in utopian writing. The form of a sinister comedy operates with an aesthetics of negativity.
