The research subject of this dissertation is Soralla de Persia, a public as well as historic and exotic personified oracle, a media event, that emerged from where the majority of her contemporaries were situated: a so called subaltern subject. Nevertheless people from all social levels were seeking her advice, even if to remain silent was imposed on her as a woman in the public space. The analyses of the character Soralla de Persia as a concrete historic subject, as a product of the former costarican popular culture and the mass media, leads to looking at her as a response to the political cultural, social democratic project. The period that encompasses the phenomenon Soralla falls together with the one of this project, that took place in Costa Rica from 1950 till the end of the seventies. The discourses of the time are well displayed in the figure Soralla de Persia, illustratively engraved into her body. The subject of research is Soralla as the central figure in her historical context, which means: influenced by the changes implicated by the social democratic project, as well as by what I will refer to as the second cultural modernization of the postwar period in Costa Rica . The first chapter outlines the Life and Miracle of Soralla de Persia, based on the informations gained from interviews with different persons. I accepted the challenge to move between the course of history and the course of fiction, between the distant look of anthropology and the look of the accomplice, the impartial immersion of the cultural analytic. In the second chapter I outline the figure of Jose Don Pepe Figueres the leader of the victorious group of the 1948 war, El Gran Caudillo , the father of the costarican democracy. He referred to his contemporaries more as subordinates than as citizens. Soralla de Persia had her caudillo and friend in Don Pepe . With him as a blue print, she started her own reinvention. I depict both characters mirroring each other. The third chapter outlines the relationship between Soralla and the mass media in the context of the changes during the period of the second cultural modernization. Initially Soralla was a product, an invention of the radio. Later she appeared also in the costarican press and television, she became a media witch . The fourth chapter describes the actors and objectives (and ways to accomplish them) of the social democratic project and the orchestration of the concept culture for the people to examine the forms and contents of Soralla's performance as a response of the culture absorbing not producing people to the official proposals.
