This thesis presents the femtosecond laser-induced electron, lattice and spin dynamics on two representative rare-earth systems: The ferromagnetic gadolinium Gd(0001) and the paramagnetic yttrium Y(0001) metals. The employed investigation tools are the time-resolved linear reflectivity and second- harmonic generation, which provide complementary information about the bulk and surface/interface dynamics, respectively. The femtosecond laser excitation of the exchange-split surface state of Gd(0001) triggers simultaneously the coherent vibrational dynamics of the lattice and spin subsystems in the surface region at a frequency of 3 THz. The coherent optical phonon corresponds to the vibration of the topmost atomic layer against the underlying bulk along the normal direction to the surface. The coupling mechanism between phonons and magnons is attributed to the modulation of the exchange interaction J between neighbour atoms due to the coherent lattice vibration. This leads to an oscillatory motion of the magnetic moments having the same frequency as the lattice vibration. Thus these results reveal a new type of phonon-magnon coupling mediated by the modulation of the exchange interaction and not by the conventional spin-orbit interaction. Moreover, we show that coherent spin dynamics in the THz frequency domain is achievable, which is at least one order of magnitude faster than previously reported. The laser-induced (de)magnetization dynamics of the ferromagnetic Gd(0001) thin films have been studied. Upon photo-excitation, the nonlinear magneto-optics measurements performed in this work show a sudden drop in the spin polarization of the surface state by more than 50% in a <100 fs time interval. Under comparable experimental conditions, the time-resolved photoemission studies reveal a constant exchange splitting of the surface state. The ultrafast decrease of spin polarization can be explained by the quasi-elastic spin-flip scattering of the hot electrons among spin-mixed states. The angular momentum conservation is fulfilled by emission or absorption of magnons, that can involve also the 4f moments. On epitaxially grown Y(0001)/W(110) thin films the femtosecond laser excitation launches acoustic phonons wavepackets at GHz frequencies, which travel back and forth within the Y(0001) film (the so called phonon echo). Their signature is reflected in the transient linear reflectivity signal as sharp peaks with alternating polarity that appear at regular time intervals. From these data, accurate values for the film thickness, sound velocity and optical penetration depth as well as the photoelastic constants of yttrium could be retrieved.
Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die ultraschnelle laserinduzierter Elektronen-, Gitter- und Spindynamik in zwei repräsentativen Seltenerd- systeme: Ferromagnetisches Gd(0001) und paramagnetisches Y(0001). Die benutzten Untersuchungsmethoden sind zeitaufgelöste lineare Reflektivität und Erzeugung der zweiten Harmonischen (SHG), die komplementäre Information über Volumen, einerseits, und Oberflächen/Grenzflächen Dynamik, andererseits, zugänglich machen. Die optische Anregung des austauschaufgespaltenen Oberflächenzustands von Gd(0001) mit Femtosekunden-Laserpulse löst simultan eine kohärente Schwingungsdynamik des Gitter- und Spin-Subsystems an der Oberfläche bei einer Frequenz von 3 THz aus. Das kohärente optische Phonon repräsentiert die Schwingung der obersten Atomlage in Bezug auf tieferliegende Schichten entlang der Oberfläche. Die Kopplung zwischen Phononen und Magnonen wird der Modulation der Austauschwechselwirkung J zwischen benachbarten Atomen zugeschrieben. Dadurch entsteht eine oszillatorische Variation des magnetischen Moments bei der gleichen Frequenz wie der Gitter-Schwingung. Die kohärente Phonon-Magnon-Mode stellt für Gd einen neuen Typ von magnetoelastischer Wechselwirkung dar, die nicht von der Spinbahnkopplung, sondern von der dynamischen Modulation der Austauschwechselwirkung vermittelt wird. Außerdem zeigen wir die Möglichkeit, dass das Spinsystem mit Frequenzen im THz-Bereich kohärent dem Gitter folgen kann. Ein weiteres Ziel dieses Projektes ist die Untersuchung der Femtosekunden-laserinduzierten Entmagnetisierung von dünnen Gd(0001) Schichten. Nach einer intensiven optischen Anregung, zeigen die SHG-Messungen dieser Arbeit einen schnellen Einbruch in die Spin-Polarisation des Oberflächezustands um mehr als 50% auf einer < 100 fs Zeitskala. Die Untersuchungen mittels zeitaufgelöster Photoemission, die unter vergleichbaren Anregungsbedingungen durchgeführt wurden, zeigen eine konstante Austauschaufspaltung des Oberflächenzustandes. Der ultraschnelle Einbruch der Spin-Polarisation ist durch quasi-elastische Spin-Flip Streuung heißer Elektronen zwischen spingemischten Zuständen erklärbar. Die Drehimpulserhaltung wird durch Emission bzw. Absorption eines Magnons erhalten, die auch 4f Momente involviert. Auf epitaktisch gewachsenen, dünnen Y(0001)/W(110) Filme, löst eine Anregung mit Femtosekunden-Laserpulsen akustische Phononen mit GHz Frequenzen die propagieren hin und züruck durch die Y(0001) Film (sogenanntes Phonon-Echo). Deren Signatur ist in der transienten linearen Reflektivität als scharfe Spitzen in regelmäßigen Zeitabständen zu beobachten. Genaue Werte für die Filmdicke, die Schallgeschwindigeit, die optische Eindringtiefe und die photoelastischen Konstanten des dünnen Y(0001) Film konnten aus den Phonon-Echo Daten abgeleitet werden.
