An Electrochemical Study of the Deposition of Copper and Silver on Thymine Modified Au(111)

Abstract

In the first part of the study, the deposition of copper on the Au(111) electrode in the presence and absence of thymine or adenine was studied with a series of cyclic voltammetry, chronocoulometry and XPS techniques. Cu-UPD in perchlorate proceeds extremely slow compared to that in specifically adsorbing sulphate anion. Interestingly, the physisorbed thymine molecules (in perchlorate) act as catalysts for the UPD of copper like sulphate anion, however, act as inhibitor kinetically for the bulk deposition. Independent of the lateral interaction of thymine molecules at the Au(111) surface, the deposition process becomes faster depending on concentration of thymine. During the deposition of copper, thymine molecules reorientate and change their adsorption state from a physisorbed state on the blank Au(111) substrate to a chemisorbed one on top of the copper monolayer. Upon chemisorption, thymine molecules become deprotonated most likely via N(3) and some charge transfer from the deprotonated thymine molecules to copper adatoms takes place. The catalytical action of thymine molecules can be explained for energetical reasons. Due to the chemisorption of thymine molecules on top of the copper layer, the potentials of zero charge of Au(111) and copper become close together leading to a reduction of the surface strain between the two metals. Deposition as well as dissolution of copper in the absence and the presence of thymine obeys a nucleation and growth mechanism with time dependent supersaturation and undersaturation, respectively. In adenine containing electrolyte, the UPD of copper is supported at a low degree in early stages, however, at further stages adenine suppresses the UPD. The higher strength of the interaction between charge-transferred adenine complex and gold surface atoms leads to the inhibition. In the second part, the deposition of silver on Au(111) in the presence and absence of thymine was studied using CV, chronocoulometry, EC-STM and XPS techniques. In the absence of thymine, at higher underpotentials (0 V), one ML of partially discharged silver is formed. Whereas, at low underpotentials (-0.120 V), 2 MLs of fully discharged silver is investigated. The second ML has most likely an expanded structure. In the presence of thymine, one ML of silver is deposited as the consequence of the interaction between Ag+ ions and chemisorbed thymine molecules. Whereas, formation of the 2nd ML is completely blocked in the UPD region. Thymine is chemisorbed on the topmost deposited partially discharged silver atoms. XPS spectra reveal an increased electron density at the N(3) in the adsorbed state compared to the signal arising from vacuum deposited thymine multilayers. It indicates that a charge transfer from the deprotonated thymine molecules to silver adatoms via N(3). The 2nd UPD and the OPD of silver are marginally hindered by the shielding effect of thymine molecules on top of silver monolayer. Upon OPD, thymine molecules are chemisorbed on the topmost partially discharged and expanded silver layer. The silver atoms below the topmost layer are fully discharged. The influence of chemisorbed thymine on silver deposition processes is strongly correlated to the energy balance between the adsorption energies of silver adatoms, thymine on the electrode and thymine on the final topmost layer. Silver adatom adsorption obeys a Langmuir mechanism. It reveals obviously that the chemisorbed thymine molecules prevent the nucleation and growth mechanism. The EC-STM study performed in overpotential region demonstrates a layer-by-layer growth (Frank- van der Merwe) rather than a three dimensional growth (Stranski-Krastanov) in the presence and absence of thymine. A long time exposure of the electrode to the electrolyte leads to the formation of silver chloride, caused by an accumulation of chloride traces. No indication on Au/Ag alloy formation in the present system could be found. In the last part, the ability to prepare a well-defined composite or layered metal surface of Ag and Cu on the Au(111) surface in the absence and presence of thymine was studied using CV, chronocoulometry, and XPS techniques. Thymine leads to a relatively stronger interaction between copper and the silver adlayer. Therefore, a layer by layer fashion or composite formation of Cu and Ag on Au(111) takes place, especially, in the presence of thymine.

Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit wurde die Abscheidung von Kupfer auf einer Au(111)-Elektrode in Gegenwart und Abwesenheit von Thymin oder Adenin mit Hilfe der zyklischen Voltammetrie (CV), Chronocoulometrie und Röntgenphotoelektronenspektroskopie (XPS) untersucht. Die Cu-UPD ist in Gegenwart von Perchlorat-Ionen verglichen zu spezifisch adsorbierenden Sulfat- Ionen stark verlangsamt. Das physisorbierte Thymin-Molekül katalysiert die Cu- UPD wie das Sulfat-Ion. Jedoch inhibiert es kinetisch die OPD. Unabhängig von der lateralen Wechselwirkung der Thymin-Moleküle auf Au(111) erhöht sich die Abscheidungsgeschwindigkeit mit der Thyminkonzentration. Im Verlauf der Cu- Abscheidung orientieren sich die Thymin-Moleküle um und ändern ihren Adsorptionszustand von physisorbiert auf Au(111) in chemisorbiert auf der Cu- Monolage. Chemisorbiertes Thymin ist deprotoniert, höchstwahrscheinlich am Stickstoff N(3). Ein Ladungstransfer vom deprotonierten Thymin zu den Cu- Adatomen findet statt. Die katalytische Aktivität des Thymins lässt sich durch eine energetische Betrachtung erklären. Durch die Chemisorption von Thymin auf der Cu-Monolage nähern sich die Nullladungspotentiale dieser Lage und von Au(111) an, was zu einer Reduzierung der Grenzflächenspannung zwischen den beiden Metallen führt. Sowohl die Abscheidung als auch die Auflösung von Cu in Abwesenheit und Gegenwart von Thymin verläuft nach einem Keimbildungs- und Wachstumsmechanismus bestimmt durch eine zeitabhängige Über- bzw. Untersättigung. In adenin-haltigem Elektrolyten wird die Cu-UPD nur in den ersten Stadien unterstützt, später hingegen wird sie unterdrückt. Die hohe Stärke der Adsorption des charge-transfer Adenin-Komplex auf Au(111) für zur Inhibierung. Im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit wurde die Abscheidung von Silber auf einer Au(111)-Elektrode in Gegenwart und Abwesenheit von Thymin mit Hilfe der CV, Chronocoulometrie, EC-STM und XPS untersucht. In Abwesenheit von Thymin wird bei höheren Unterpotentialen (0 V), ein teilweise entladene Monolage (ML) Silber abgeschieden. Bei niedrigeren Unterpotentialen (-0.120 V), wird eine zweite vollständig ungeladene Monolage Silber abgeschieden. Die zweite ML hat höchstwahrscheinlich eine offene Struktur. In Gegenwart von Thymin wird eine ML Silber aufgrund der Wechselwirkung zwischen Ag+ und chemisorbiertem Thymin abgeschieden. Die Abscheidung der zweiten ML Silber im UPD-Bereich ist hingegen vollständig blockiert. Thymin ist auf den obersten, teilweise entladenen Silberatomen chemisorbiert. Die XP-Spektren zeigen im Vergleich zu im UHV aufgedampften Thymin eine erhöhte Elektronendichte am N(3). Dies deutet auf einen Ladungstransfer über das N(3) vom deprotonierten Thymin auf die Silberadatome. Die zweite UPD und die OPD von Silber sind durch einen Abschirmungseffekt des Thymins auf der Ag ML geringfügig behindert. Auf der obersten, offenen, teilweise entladenen OPD-Volumen-Schicht sind die Thymin-Moleküle chemisorbiert. Die darunter liegenden Ag-Atome sind vollständig entladen. Der Einfluss von chemisorbiertem Thymin auf die Ag- Abscheidungsprozesse korreliert stark mit dem Verhältnis zwischen den Adsorptionsenergien der Ag-Adatome, des Thymin auf der Au(111)-Elektrode und des Thymins auf der obersten Schicht Adatome. Die Ag-Adsorption folgt einem Langmuir-Mechanismus. Offensichtlich verhindert chemisorbiertes Thymin den Keimbildungs- und Wachstumsmechanismus. Die EC-STM-Untersuchungen in der OPD- Region zeigen eher ein Schicht für Schicht Wachstum (Frank van der Merwe) als ein dreidimensionales Wachstum (Stranski-Krastanov) in Gegenwart und Abwesenheit von Thymin. Setzt man die Elektrode längere Zeit dem Elektrolyten aus, bildet sich Silberchlorid durch Anreicherungen von Chlorid-Spuren. Es konnten keine Anzeichen für eine Au/Ag-Legierungsbildung gefunden werden. Im letzten Teil dieser Arbeit wurde die Möglichkeit zur Darstellung definierter Schichtstrukturen von Ag und Cu auf Au(111) in Gegenwart und Abwesenheit von Thymin mit CV, Chronocoulometrie und XPS untersucht. Thymin führt zu einer relativ stärkeren Wechselwirkung zwischen Cu und Ag. Daher kann eine Schicht für Schicht-Abscheidung von Cu auf Ag auf Ag(111) in der gegenwart von Thymin stattfinden.
