Reactions of Boron with Fluorides of Oxygen and Selected Pnictogens: A Matrix Isolation and IR Spectroscopic Investigation

Abstract

The chemistry of main group elements continues to be a field of broad and ongoing interest, and among them, boron holds a particularly versatile and fascinating position. This thesis employs low-temperature matrix-isolated infrared spectroscopy, combined with quantum chemical calculations, to investigate the reactions of boron atoms with oxygen difluoride (OF2) and fluorinated pnictogen compounds (NF3, PF3 and AsF3). Through a series of targeted investigations, this work expands our understanding of how the boron atom participates in unique bonding interactions and forms distinctive bonding framework. Boron oxo difluoride OBF2 (C2v, 2B2) and the linear oxo monofluoride OBF (C∞v, 1Σ+) were generated by the reaction of laser-ablated boron atoms with OF2 and characterized by matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy. The calculated Kohn-Sham molecular orbitals and spin density of OBF2 display that the unpaired electron is mainly localized at the terminal oxygen atom. Notably, OBF exhibits a strong triple bond B≡O, which arises from two degenerate electron-sharing Π bonds and an O→B dative σ bond. The reaction of ablated boron atoms with nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) was concluded to lead to the formation of the fluoroborylene [N(BF)2]+, NBF radical, nitrido diflouride NBF2, BNBF and FBNBF species. Their assignments were based on the nitrogen-boron stretching vibrations with characteristic 14/15N and 10/11B isotopic shifts. The bonding situation of linear FB−(N+)−BF molecule can be described as highly delocalized covalent bonding throughout the whole molecule. In the reactions of laser-ablated B atoms with PF3, the spontaneously formed BPF3 complex was observed in the co-deposition of PF3 diluted in Ne. BPF3 was calculated to have C3v symmetry in the 4A1 ground state, the quartet multiplicity of the ground state was confirmed by the good agreement of the computed frequencies and experimentally observed absorption band positions. The spin density is primarily located at the boron atom. Bonding analysis suggests that the BP bond of BPF3 is formed by a dative σ-bond from PF3→B and a Π-backdonation from B to PF3. Additionally, phosphaborene F2B−P=BF stabilized by small substituents (F and BF2) was detected. It results from the reaction of two boron atoms with PF3 and was predicted to feature an acute BPB bond angle of approximately 83°. The singlebonded radicals FB−AsF2, F2B−AsF and arsinoborene F2B−As=BF were observed in the reactions of B atoms with AsF3. The discovery of arsinoborene F2B−As=BF significantly expands the established class of compounds with multiple bonds between heavy main group elements and boron.

Die Chemie der Hauptgruppenelemente ist nach wie vor ein Gebiet von großem und anhaltendem Interesse, und unter ihnen nimmt Bor eine besonders vielseitige und faszinierende Stellung ein. In dieser Arbeit wird Matrix-Isolation-Infrarotspektroskopie unter kryogenen Bedingungen in Kombination mit quantenchemischen Berechnungen verwendet, um die Reaktionen von Boratomen mit Sauerstoffdifluorid (OF2) und fluorierten Pnictogenverbindungen (NF3, PF3 und AsF3) zu untersuchen. Durch eine Reihe gezielter Untersuchungen erweitert diese Arbeit unser Verständnis davon, wie Boratome an einzigartigen Bindungswechselwirkungen teilnehmen und unverwechselbare Bindungsgerüste bilden. Mit dieser Technik, wurden Boroxydifluorid OBF2 (C2v, 2B2) und das lineare Oxomonofluorid OBF(C∞v, 1Σ+) durch die Reaktion von laserablatierten Boratomen mit OF2 hergestellt und mittels Matrix-Isolations-Infrarotspektroskopie charakterisiert. Die berechneten Kohn-Sham- Molekülorbitale und die Spindichte von OBF2 zeigen, dass sich das ungepaarte Elektron hauptsächlich am terminalen Sauerstoffatom befindet. Bemerkenswerterweise weist OBF eine starke Dreifachbindung B≡O auf, die aus zwei entarteten Elektronen teilenden Π-Bindungen und einer dativen O→B σ-Bindung entsteht. Zusätzlich wurden durch die Reaktion von verdampften Boratomen mit Stickstofftrifluorid (NF3) der Fluoroborylenkomplex [N(BF)2]+, das NBF-Radikal sowie die Nitriddifluoride NBF2, BNBF und FBNBF gebildet. Ihre Zuordnungen basierten auf den Stickstoff-Bor-Streckschwingungen mit charakteristischen 14/15N und 10/11B Isotopenverschiebungen. Die Bindungssituation des linearen FB−(N+)−BF-Moleküls kann als stark delokalisierte kovalente Bindung im gesamten Molekül beschrieben werden. Bei den Reaktionen von laserablatierten B-Atomen mit PF3 wurde bei der gleichzeitigen Abscheidung von in Ne verdünntem PF3 der spontan gebildete BPF3-Komplex beobachtet. Es wurde berechnet, dass BPF3 im 4A1 Grundzustand C3v Symmetrie aufweist. Die gesamte Spindichte ist überwiegend am Boratom lokalisiert. Bindungsanalysen lassen darauf schließen, dass die BP-Bindung durch eine dative σ-Bindung von PF3→B und eine Π-Rückbindung von B zu PF3 gebildet wird. Darüber hinaus wurde auch das durch kleine Substituenten (F und BF2) stabilisierte Phosphaboren F2B−P=BF nachgewiesen, für das ein spitzer BPB-Bindungswinkel von 83° vorhergesagt wurde. Bei den Reaktionen von B-Atomen mit AsF3 wurden die einfach gebundenen Radikale FB−AsF2, F2B−AsF und Arsinoboren F2B−As=BF beobachtet. Diese Entdeckung des Arsinoborens F2B−As=BF erweitert die Reihe der Mehrfachbindungssysteme zwischen schweren Hauptgruppenelementen und Bor.
