The dissertation deals with the results of a survey project (Proyecto Arqueológico Orcón-Pacaybamba) conducted from 2005 to 2007 in the dry valley of Orcón-Pacaybamba, a tributary of the Chancay river valley traversing the central pacific coast of Peru, about 60 km north of the capital Lima. To investigate the settlement mode of the time span called Late Pottery Formative Period to Regional Development Period (5th century BC – 8th century AD) field prospection and test pits were combined for the purpose of a detailed reconstruction of the settlement history including climate changes und cultural-specific subsistence strategies. In compliance with the working hypothesis about the origin of the Lima state, our research especially focused on the interactions between the farming population in the study area and the fishermen on the nearby coast. Based on the comprehensive study, collection and analysis of artifacts and archaeological features, new cultures have been defined and distinguished in space and time from already known ones, as for example the Lima culture. This also included a new classification of the local ceramic wares for the time period in consideration as well as a new chronological order of the different styles and their relative position to the style sequences of the nearby coastal valleys. As a result it has been noticed that the Orcón-Pacaybamba valley was dominated by a scenario of endemic war for plunder at the end of the Formative Period, but still without using the newly generated form of physical force to stabilize leadership and develop a social hierarchy gaining priority over traditional kinship relations. After the collapse of the formative age, at the beginning of the Period of Regional Development, new carriers of culture made their appearance, which were still organized in pre-state communities and probably maintained a ritualized form of warfare. At the end of this phase, about 400 AD, an ENSO event and the ensuing dramatic decrease in fish stocks on the Peruvian coast mark the disintegration of the traditional production community of fishermen and farmers. The following conflict over the reduced food resources forced the carriers of the Miramar culture in Ancon to conquest new land in Orcón. Another climatic event, a drought at the transition from the fifth to the sixth century AD, led to the drying up of springs and consequently to a considerable reduction of settlement area in the Orcón-Pacaybamba valley so that territorial warfare again was brought into action to open new resources. For that reason, besides the emergence of hierocratic and formal warfare institutions, for the first time the formation of a rural territorial state can be observed on the central coast of Peru.
