Im Athen der Gegenwart, getragen von einer städtischen Landschaft geprägt von Krise und Austerität, haben sich Street Art und Graffiti als gesellschaftlich bedeutsame Medien politischer Subversion im öffentlichen Raum etabliert. Die Wände der Stadt legen Zeugnis ab von einem anhaltenden Ausnahmezustand: politische Slogans und Symbole, Portraits von Protest und sozialen Kämpfen sowie expressive Darstellungen des gelebten Alltags der Krise formen ein lebendes Archiv des historischen Momentes. Entlang des empirischen Beispiels Athen widmet sich dieser Beitrag dem politischen Potenzial von visuellen Interventionen im urbanen Raum. Der Fokus liegt dabei explizit auf Arbeiten, die sich kritisch mit dem symbolischen Erbe der Antike auseinandersetzen. Wie wirken die Worte und Bilder an den Wänden der Stadt auf den urbanen Alltag sowie das kollektive politische Bewusstsein ein? Und welche politischen, womöglich subalternen Möglichkeitsräume entstehen in der Begegnung zwischen Stadtbewohner_innen und Street Art innerhalb der materiellen Konfiguration der Stadt? Die Bedeutung von Street Art und Graffiti liegt hier nicht allein in ihrer repräsentativen Funktion, stets gebunden an den gegebenen sozio-politischen Kontext. Als performative Praxen gestalten sie aktiv den öffentlichen Raum um und schreiben alternative Vorstellungen und politische Möglichkeiten in die Oberfläche der Stadt ein.
In contemporary Athens, emerging from an urban landscape deeply transformed by crisis and austerity, the cultural practice of street art has gained enormous significance as a self-authorized medium of public expression. Under the prolonged state of emergency, the walls of the city have come to life with poetic scribbles and political slogans, with portraits of protest and struggle, and expressive depictions of everyday life in the city, forming a living archive of the current historical conjuncture. Following the empirical case study of Athens, this contribution traces the political potential of visual interventions into urban space, focusing specifically on artworks that engage critically with the symbolic purchase of antiquity. How do the words and images on the walls of the city impact the urban everyday as well as the collective political consciousness? And which political, perhaps subaltern, spaces of possibility emerge from the encounter between urban dwellers and street art and graffiti within the material configuration of the city? I here argue that that street art and graffiti are never merely static representations of their given socio-cultural context. Rather, they also have the potential to actively transform urban space and reimagine everyday life by inscribing alternative histories and possibilities into the very surface of the city.
