dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
In the present study, the effects of a Mind Body Medicine (MBM) based therapy on quality
of life, lifestyle modifications and on chronic mental and physical complaints were
examined. Within the scope of a one-arm prospective cohort study, 99 patients with
chronic diseases participated in a twelve-week MBM day clinic program. Structured
questionnaires were used to collect data on the health status of patients at the beginning
and end of the program and three months after completion. The questionnaires consisted
of evaluated measuring instruments such as Short Form-12 Health Survey (SF-12),
Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) 10, WHOFive
Well-Being Index WHO-5, Self Compassion Scale – German version (SCS-D) as
well as self-designed elements for lifestyle modifications and program evaluation.
The health related quality of life (SF-12) measured as physical and mental well-being of
the patients increased significantly during therapy. The effects also continued three
months after the program ended. Depressive and anxiety symptoms improved
significantly in the course of the day clinic (p <0.05). The improvement persisted three
months after the program was completed, however the level of significance was not
reached in all cases (HADS). The perceived stress level dropped (PSS) and further
dimensions of quality of life showed a long-term and significant increase (WHO-5, SCSD).
The MBM program led to favorable lifestyle modifications in the areas of nutrition,
exercise and relaxation. The program received a positive assessment by the majority of
patients.
The results of this study indicate that a structured program based on MBM may contribute
to the recovery of chronically ill people and improve their quality of life. Structured lifestyle
modifications and their integration into everyday life improve the physical and
mental ailments of the patients. The presented therapeutical MBM intervention can be a
meaningful supplement to the acute medicine-oriented hospital treatment of chronically
ill patients.
