Ein Bibliotheksbrand und ein Raubzug durch Europa: Einblicke in die Provenienzforschung nach NS-Raubgut in der Bibliothek des Botanischen Gartens Berlin

Abstract

Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs erworbene Bestände in der Bibliothek des Botanischen Gartens Berlin werden in einem aktuellen Projekt auf NS-Raubgut untersucht. Der Artikel erläutert, wie nach dem Verlust der Bibliothek durch einen Bombentreffer 1943 unmittelbar große Mengen botanischer Fachliteratur als Ersatz beschafft werden konnten, die teils mit Raubgut durchsetzt sind. Dabei geraten nicht nur die am Raub beteiligten staatlichen und politischen Institutionen in den Blick, sondern mehr und mehr auch der antiquarische Buchmarkt in der NS-Zeit.

Holdings of the library of the Botanic Garden Berlin acquired during the Second World War are being put under scrutiny to identify Nazi looted assets as part of a wider research project. The article outlines how the library, after being hit by an air attack in 1943, was able to replace large amounts of the specialist literature in botany with looted assets to compensate the loss. This not only brings into view the public and political institutions involved in the looting, but also shifts the focus onto the antiquarian book market in the Nazi era.
