In the area of the Lesser Antilles volcanic arc several types of manganese precipitates were sampled: encrustations on sediments and volcanic rocks, stratabound sandstone layers with manganese matrix, and massive crusts. At the Montserrat Ridge very thick massive crusts up to 27 cm thickness were found. The inner layers of these crusts show typical mineralogical and geochemical features of hydrothermal formation: bladed and massive todorokite mineralisations with high Fe/Mn-ratios (up to 87), low contents of minor elements such as Co, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn, and typical hydrothermal REE-patterns (negative Ce-anomalies and low ΣREE contents). The banded textures of manganese oxides point to a rhythmical precipitation from a low-temperature hydrothermal fluid. In the outer crust layers and in the coating of the massive crusts vernadite (d-manganate mixed with Fe-oxihydroxides) is the common mineral phase. Here the Mn/Fe ratios are very low and contents of minor elements reach up to e.g. 4000 ppm Ni, 2400 ppm Co and 1300 ppm Pb which point to hydrogenetic growth. Nontronites in these massive crusts exhibit hydrothermal features: Fe/Al ratios from 12.1 to 18.8 with elevated Zn values up to 500 ppm. Manganese encrustations from the Kahouanne Basin often show elevated Cu and Zn values with typical hydrothermal REE patterns which suggest a descendent hydrothermal formation (incorporation of plume fall-out particles). Modelling of the physical and chemical conditions during the formation of nontronite and manganese oxides suggests that both mineral phases could precipitate from a hydrothermal fluid with the same initial composition at different temperatures and/or at different fluid/seawater ratios. The formation of nontronite takes place at 90°C under reduced conditions at pH 5.6 while as MnO2 precipitate between 40 and 50°C under oxic conditions and at a pH value of 6.2. Comparing the radiogenic isotope composition of seawater with that of the arc volcanic rocks, the hydrothermal components in the manganese crusts were calculated. The radiogenic isotope compositions of Sr, Nd, Hf, and Os reveal large differences in hydrothermal versus seawater contributions. Assuming metal concentrations in the initial hydrothermal fluids similar to those found at mid ocean ridge systems and isotopic compositions similar to the neighboring island arcs, hydrothermal Nd reaching up to 30 % and hydrothermal Sr contributions as high as 30 % were found in the most hydrothermally influenced parts of the crusts. Especially the high hydrothermal Nd contributions indicate a crust formation very close to a hydrothermal vent as ascendent hydrothermal precipitates. Hafnium and Osmium in these crust sections may even have received larger hydrothermal contributions. The results of the isotope investigations suggest that low temperature hydrothermal inputs originating from island arc volcanism make an important contribution to the global ocean element budget.
