Background: In recent years, new interventional therapies for tricuspid regurgitation (TR) demonstrated their effectiveness in reducing TR severity and improving symptoms. Currently, tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (T-TEER) and percutaneous annuloplasty are the most widely used techniques in Europe. In this retrospective study, we compared procedural characteristics and learning curves of both TR devices in a real-world cohort.
Material and methods: Eligible patients with severe to torrential TR underwent either percutaneous annuloplasty or T-TEER as recommended by the local heart team. Patients with combined mitral and tricuspid interventions were excluded from the analysis. The study focused on procedural characteristics, TR reduction and learning curves.
Results: A total of 122 patients underwent either percutaneous annuloplasty (n = 64) or T-TEER (n = 58) with a technical and device success rate of 98% and 97%, respectively. Reasons for technical failure included right coronary artery (RCA) dissection prior to percutaneous annuloplasty, and two single leaflet device attachments (SLDA) during T-TEER implantation. The mean improvement of TR severity was 2.4 ± 0.8 degrees after T-TEER and 2.5 ± 0.8 after percutaneous annuloplasty. T-TEER procedures were shorter in terms of both procedure time and radiation exposure, while percutaneous annuloplasty, although taking longer, showed a significant reduction in procedure time over the course of the analysed period.
Conclusion: In summary, both interventional therapies reduce TR severity by approximately two degrees when used in the appropriate anatomy. The learning curve for annuloplasty group showed a significant decrease of procedure times.
Weniger anzeigenObjectives: Due to the limited longevity of endovascular leads, children require thoughtful lifetime lead management strategies including conservation of access vessel patency. Consequently, there is an increasing interest in transvenous lead extraction (TLE) in children, however, data on TLE and the use of powered mechanical dissection sheaths is limited. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study analyzing all children <18 years that underwent TLE in our institution from 2015 to 2022. Procedural complexity, results and complications were defined as recommended by recent consensus statements. Results: Twenty-eight children [median age 12.8 (interquartile range 11.3-14.6) years] were included. Forty-one leads were extracted [median dwell time 85 (interquartile range 52-102) months]. Extractions of 31 leads (76%) in 22 patients (79%) were complex, requiring advanced extraction tools including powered bidirectional rotational dissection sheaths in 14 children. There were no major complications. Complete procedural success was achieved in 18 (64%) and clinical success in 27 patients (96%), respectively. Procedural success and complexity varied between lead types. The Medtronic SelectSecure (TM) lead was associated with increased odds of extraction by simple traction (p = 0.006) and complete procedural success (p < 0.001) while the Boston Scientific Fineline (TM) II lead family had increased odds of partial procedural failure (p = 0.017). Conclusions: TLE with the use of mechanical powered rotational dissection sheaths is feasible and safe in pediatric patients. In light of rare complications and excellent overall clinical success, TLE should be considered an important cornerstone in lifetime lead management in children. Particular lead types might be more challenging and less successful to extract.
Weniger anzeigenTo assess whether in-silico models can be used to predict the risk of thrombus formation in pulmonary artery pressure sensors (PAPS), a chronic animal study using pigs was conducted. Computed tomography (CT) data was acquired before and immediately after implantation, as well as one and three months after the implantation. Devices were implanted into 10 pigs, each one in the left and right pulmonary artery (PA), to reduce the required number of animal experiments. The implantation procedure aimed at facilitating optimal and non-optimal positioning of the devices to increase chances of thrombus formation. Eight devices were positioned non-optimally. Three devices were positioned in the main PA instead of the left and right PA. Pre-interventional PA geometries were reconstructed from the respective CT images, and the devices were virtually implanted at the exact sites and orientations indicated by the follow-up CT after one month. Transient intra-arterial hemodynamics were calculated using computational fluid dynamics. Volume flow rates were modelled specifically matching the animals body weights. Wall shear stresses (WSS) and oscillatory shear indices (OSI) before and after device implantation were compared. Simulations revealed no relevant changes in any investigated hemodynamic parameters due to device implantation. Even in cases, where devices were implanted in a non-optimal manner, no marked differences in hemodynamic parameters compared to devices implanted in an optimal position were found. Before implantation time and surface-averaged WSS was 2.35 ± 0.47 Pa, whereas OSI was 0.08 ± 0.17, respectively. Areas affected by low WSS magnitudes were 2.5 ± 2.7 cm², whereas the areas affected by high OSI were 18.1 ± 6.3 cm². After device implantation, WSS and OSI were 2.45 ± 0.49 Pa and 0.08 ± 0.16, respectively. Surface areas affected by low WSS and high OSI were 2.9 ± 2.7 cm², and 18.4 ± 6.1 cm², respectively. This in-silico study indicates that no clinically relevant differences in intra-arterial hemodynamics are occurring after device implantation, even at non-optimal positioning of the sensor. Simultaneously, no embolic events were observed, suggesting that the risk for thrombus formation after device implantation is low and independent of the sensor position.
Weniger anzeigenObjectives: Crystal deposits in ligaments of the wrist are typical findings in patients with calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease. CPPD crystals trigger inflammation and ultimately result in ligament tears with scapholunate (SL) advanced collapse (SLAC). This study aimed to investigate carpal instabilities in patients with CPPD using four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) of the wrist.
Methods: This IRB-approved prospective feasibility study investigated patients with CPPD of the hand. All patients underwent a static 3D-CT and two dynamic 4D-CT in ulnar- and radial abduction and in supination and pronation movements to analyze instabilities of the SL region and of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ). Two independent readers scored the images for the presence of SL ligament and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) calcifications. Furthermore, the readers assessed the dynamic images for SL and DRUJ instabilities. Descriptive analyses were performed. Inter-rater reliability was assessed using Cohen’s kappa (κ).
Results: Nine patients were included. SL ligament calcifications and instabilities were found in all patients. Of these, dynamic SL instability was detected in 77.8% of the patients, while 22.2% had a SLAC wrist. TFCC calcifications were found in 87.5% of the patients. Four patients had DRUJ instability (50%). No patient showed DRUJ instability without the presence of TFCC calcifications. Agreement between readers for calcifications was excellent (κ = 1) and almost perfect (κ = 0.89) for instabilities.
Conclusion: This study provides the first evidence of relevant dynamic carpal instability in CPPD patients using advanced imaging techniques with 4D-CT, offering unique insights into wrist biomechanics.
Weniger anzeigenObjectives: Stethoscopes carry a significant risk for pathogen transmission. Here, the safe use and performance of a new, non-sterile, single-use stethoscope cover (SC), that is impermeable for pathogens, was investigated by different healthcare professionals (HCPs) in the postoperative care setting of an intensive care unit (ICU).
Methods: Fifty-four patients underwent routine auscultations with the use of the SC (Stethoglove®, Stethoglove GmbH, Hamburg, Germany). The participating HCPs (n = 34) rated each auscultation with the SC on a 5-point Likert scale. The mean ratings of acoustic quality and the SC handling were defined as primary and secondary performance endpoint.
Results: 534 auscultations with the SC were performed (average 15.7/user) on the lungs (36.1%), the abdomen (33.2%), the heart (28.8%), or other body-sites (1.9%). No adverse device-effects occurred. The acoustic quality was rated at 4.2 ± 0.7 (mean) with a total of 86.1% of all auscultations being rated at least as 4/5, and with no rating as below 2. The SC handling was rated at 3.7 ± 0.8 (mean) with a total of 96.4% of all auscultations being rated at least 3/5.
Conclusion: Using a real-world setting, this study demonstrates that the SC can be safely and effectively used as cover for stethoscopes during auscultation. The SC may therefore represent a useful and easy-to-implement tool for preventing stethoscope-mediated infections.

Weniger anzeigenPurpose: Automated lesion segmentation is increasingly used in acute ischemic stroke magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We explored in detail the performance of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) thresholding for delineating baseline diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesions.
Methods: Retrospective, exploratory analysis of the prospective observational single-center 1000Plus study from September 2008 to June 2013 (clinicaltrials.org; NCT00715533). We built a fully automated lesion segmentation algorithm using a fixed ADC threshold (≤620 × 10–6 mm2/s) to delineate the baseline DWI lesion and analyzed its performance compared to manual assessments. Diagnostic capabilities of best possible ADC thresholds were investigated using receiver operating characteristic curves. Influential patient factors on ADC thresholding techniques’ performance were studied by conducting multiple linear regression.
Results: 108 acute ischemic stroke patients were selected for analysis. The median Dice coefficient for the algorithm was 0.43 (IQR 0.20–0.64). Mean ADC values in the DWI lesion (β = −0.68, p < 0.001) and DWI lesion volumes (β = 0.29, p < 0.001) predicted performance. Optimal individual ADC thresholds differed between subjects with a median of ≤691 × 10−6 mm2/s (IQR ≤660–750 × 10−6 mm2/s). Mean ADC values in the DWI lesion (β = −0.96, p < 0.001) and mean ADC values in the brain parenchyma (β = 0.24, p < 0.001) were associated with the performance of individual thresholds.
Conclusion: The performance of ADC thresholds for delineating acute stroke lesions varies substantially between patients. It is influenced by factors such as lesion size as well as lesion and parenchymal ADC values. Considering the inherent noisiness of ADC maps, ADC threshold-based automated delineation of very small lesions is not reliable.
Weniger anzeigenBackground: Transcatheter annuloplasty is meant to target annular dilatation and is therefore mainly applied in functional tricuspid regurgitation (TR). Due to recent recognition of varying disease pathophysiology and differentiation of ventricular and atrial functional TR (VFTR and AFTR), comparative data regarding procedural success for both disease entities are required.
Methods: In this consecutively enrolled observational cohort study, 65 patients undergoing transcatheter annuloplasty with a Cardioband® device were divided into VFTR (n = 35, 53.8%) and AFTR (n = 30, 46.2%). Procedural success was assessed by comparing changes in annulus dilatation, vena contracta (VC) width, effective regurgitation orifice area (EROA), as well as reduction in TR severity.
Results: Overall, improvement of TR by at least two grades was achieved in 59 patients (90.8%), and improvement of TR by at least three grades was realised in 32 patients (49.2%). Residual TR of ≤2 was observed in 52 patients (80.0%). No significant differences in annulus diameter reduction [VFTR: 11 mm (9–13) vs. AFTR: 12 mm (9–16), p = 0.210], VC reduction [12 mm (8–14) vs. 12 mm (7–14), p = 0.868], and EROA reduction [0.62 cm2 (0.45–1.10) vs. 0.54 cm2 (0.40–0.70), p = 0.204] were reported. Improvement by at least two grades [27 (90.0%) vs. 32 (91.4%), p = 1.0] and three grades [14 (46.7%) vs. 18 (51.4%), p = 0.805] was similar in VFTR and AFTR, respectively. No significant difference in the accomplishment of TR grade of ≤2 [21 (70.0%) vs. 31 (88.6%), p = 0.118] was noted.
Conclusion: According to our results from a real-world scenario, transcatheter annuloplasty with the Cardioband® device may be applied in both VFTR and AFTR with evidence of significant procedural TR reduction.
Weniger anzeigenIntroduction: Mechanic power output (MPO) and oxygen consumption (VO2) reflect endurance capacity and are often stated relative to body mass (BM) but less often per skeletal muscle mass (SMM). Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) has previously shown conflicting results between sexes at submaximal intensities. Individual body composition, however, largely differs due to sex and training status. It was the aim of this study to evaluate RPE of untrained and trained individuals of both sexes considering body composition and to estimate whether RPE could be improved as a tool to determine endurance capacity.
Methods: The study included 34 untrained adults (age 26.18 ± 6.34 years, 18 women) and 29 endurance trained (age 27.86 ± 5.19, 14 women) who were measured for body composition (InBody 770, InBody Europe B.V., Germany) and tested on a treadmill (Pulsar, H/P/Cosmos, Germany) for aerobic capacity (Metalyzer 3B, Cortex Biophysik GmbH, Germany) in an all-out exercise test applying the Bruce-protocol. VO2, MPO, heart rate (HR), and RPE were obtained at each exercise stage. VO2 and MPO were calculated per BM and SMM. RPE values were correlated with absolute VO2 and MPO, as well as relative to BM, and SMM. HR values and the parameters’ standardized values served for comparison to standard procedures.
Results: VO2 and MPO were higher in men compared to women and in trained compared to untrained participants. No differences between groups and sexes exist when VO2 and MPO were calculated per BM. When calculated per SMM, VO2 and MPO indicate opposite results already at low intensity stages of exercise test. RPE values had highest correlation with MPO per SMM (R2 = 0.8345) compared to absolute MPO (R2 = 0.7609), or MPO per BM (R2 = 0.8176). Agreement between RPE and MPO per SMM was greater than between RPE and HR (p = 0.008).
Conclusion: Although RPE represents a subjective value at first glance, it was shown that RPE constitutes a valuable tool to estimate endurance capacity, which can be further enhanced if individual body composition is considered. Furthermore, MPO and VO2 should be considered relative to SMM. These findings might help to avoid over-exertion, especially among untrained people, by adjusting the training intensity for each subject according to the individual strain evaluated in an exercise test based on individual body composition.
Weniger anzeigenCurrent approaches to the treatment of non-affective psychosis include elements of mentalization-based treatment and the potential in enhancing mentalizing capacity in this patient group has been widely emphasized. This article presents the "psychotic identity dilemma", a concept by Stavros Mentzos, and a therapeutic approach considering this concept as a valuable complementary addition to these treatments. The idea of a dilemma between closeness and distance, which in itself cannot be represented mentally at first, helps to respond to specific needs of patients with psychotic disorders by placing the treatment focus on fundamental interpersonal processes. Following this train of thought, this article attempts to shed light on the importance of the "real relationship" between therapist and patient as well as the exploration of the "here and now", especially at the beginning of psychotherapeutic treatment. Two treatment modes are suggested, one characterized by the experience of interpersonality within the therapeutic relationship and a second one characterized by the reflection of interpersonal phenomena. These modes are framed by Stavros Mentzos' concept of an identity dilemma. We describe how mentalizing first needs to be addressed implicitly in a tolerable, exemplary relationship in which closeness and distance are regulated based on the therapist's countertransference, then explicitly. A series of interventions are described, which allow for moments of shared attention, promote intentionality and contingency and, later in the course of therapy, help to integrate experiences into narratives.
Weniger anzeigenBackground: Entamoeba gingivalis (E. gingivalis) is an anaerobic protozoan that is strongly associated with inflamed periodontal pockets. It is able to invade the mucosal epithelium of the human host, where it can feed on epithelial cells and elicit a severe innate immune response. Unlike other Entamoeba species, it is considered that E. gingivalis cannot form cysts, because it is a non-infectious protozoan. The lack of encystation capability would make it susceptible to periodontal treatment. However, it is not clear how the human host becomes infected with E. gingivalis trophozoites. We investigated the ability of E. gingivalis to encapsulate in response to an unfavorable environment in vitro.
Methods: Different strains of E. gingivalis, isolated from inflamed periodontal pocket samples, were cultured for 8 days in the presence or absence of the antimicrobials amoxycillin and metronidazole. To reveal cyst formation, we investigated the morphology and ultrastructure of the amoeba by light, fluorescence, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. We also used the fluorescent dye calcofluor white M2R to demonstrate chitin present in the cyst wall.
Results: We observed exocysts and an intra-cystic space separating the encapsulated trophozoite from the environment. Remarkably, cysts showed a smooth surface, polygonal edges and smaller size compared to free-living trophozoites. In addition, encapsulated trophozoites that detached from the cyst wall had a dense cytoplasma without phagocytic vesicles. The cyst walls consisted of chitin as in other Entamoba species. The encapsulated trophozoids were mononuclear after antibioticinduced encapsulation.
Discussion: We conclude that E. gingivalis cyst formation has significant implications for dissemination and infection and may explain why established treatment approaches often fail to halt periodontal tissue destruction during periodontitis and peri-implantitis.
Weniger anzeigenIntroduction: Orthostatic dysregulation occurs during exposure to an increased gravitational vector and is especially common upon re-entering standard Earth gravity (1 g) after an extended period in microgravity (0 g). External peripheral skin cooling (PSC) has recently been described as a potent countermeasure against orthostatic dysregulation during heat stress and in lower body negative pressure (LBNP) studies. We therefore hypothesized that PSC may also be an effective countermeasure during hyper-gravity exposure (+Gz).
Methods: To investigate this, we designed a randomized short-arm human centrifuge (SAHC) experiment ("Coolspin") to investigate whether PSC could act as a stabilizing factor in cardiovascular function during+Gz. Artificial gravity between +1 g and+4 gwas generated by a SAHC. 18 healthy male volunteers completed two runs in the SAHC. PSC was applied during one of the two runs and the other run was conducted without cooling. Each run consisted of a 10-min baseline trial followed by a +Gz step protocol marked by increasing g-forces, with each step being 3min long. The following parameters were measured: blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), total peripheral resistance (TPR), cardiac output (CO). Furthermore, a cumulative stress index for each subject was calculated.
Results: +Gz led to significant changes in primary as well as in secondary outcome parameters such as HR, SV, TPR, CO, and BP. However, none of the primary outcome parameters (HR, cumulative stress-index, BP) nor secondary outcome parameters (SV, TPR, CO) showed any significant differences-whether the subject was cooled or not cooled. Systolic BP did, however, tend to be higher amongst the PSC group.
Conclusion: In conclusion, PSC during +Gz did not confer any significant impact on hemodynamic activity or orthostatic stability during +Gz. This may be due to lower PSC responsiveness of the test subjects, or an insufficient level of body surface area used for cooling. Further investigations are warranted in order to comprehensively pinpoint the exact degree of PSC needed to serve as a useful countermeasure system during +Gz.
Weniger anzeigenBackground: Muscle fatigue and pain are key symptoms of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). Although the pathophysiology is not yet fully understood, there is ample evidence for hypoperfusion which may result in electrolyte imbalance and sodium overload in muscles. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess levels of sodium content in muscles of patients with ME/CFS and to compare these to healthy controls.
Methods: Six female patients with ME/CFS and six age, BMI and sex matched controls underwent Na-23-MRI of the left lower leg using a clinical 3T MR scanner before and after 3 min of plantar flexion exercise. Sodium reference phantoms with solutions of 10, 20, 30 and 40 mmol/L NaCl were used for quantification. Muscle sodium content over 40 min was measured using a dedicated plugin in the open-source DICOM viewer Horos. Handgrip strength was measured and correlated with sodium content.
Results: Baseline tissue sodium content was higher in all 5 lower leg muscle compartments in ME/CFS compared to controls. Within the anterior extensor muscle compartment, the highest difference in baseline muscle sodium content between ME/CFS and controls was found (mean ± SD; 12.20 ± 1.66 mM in ME/CFS versus 9.38 ± 0.71 mM in controls, p = 0.0034). Directly after exercise, tissue sodium content increased in gastrocnemius and triceps surae muscles with + 30% in ME/CFS (p = 0.0005) and + 24% in controls (p = 0.0007) in the medial gastrocnemius muscle but not in the extensor muscles which were not exercised. Compared to baseline, the increase of sodium content in medial gastrocnemius muscle was stronger in ME/CFS than in controls with + 30% versus + 17% to baseline at 12 min (p = 0.0326) and + 29% versus + 16% to baseline at 15 min (p = 0.0265). Patients had reduced average handgrip strength which was associated with increased average muscle tissue sodium content (p = 0.0319, R-2 = 0.3832).
Conclusion: Muscle sodium content before and after exercise was higher in ME/CFS than in healthy controls. Furthermore, our findings indicate an inverse correlation between muscle sodium content and handgrip strength. These findings provide evidence that sodium overload may play a role in the pathophysiology of ME/CFS and may allow for potential therapeutic targeting.
Weniger anzeigenX-rays are invaluable for imaging and sterilization of bones, yet the resulting ionization and primary radiation damage mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we monitor in-situ collagen backbone degradation in dry bones using second-harmonic-generation and X-ray diffraction. Collagen breaks down by cascades of photon-electron excitations, enhanced by the presence of mineral nanoparticles. We observe protein disintegration with increasing exposure, detected as residual strain relaxation in pre-stressed apatite nanocrystals. Damage rapidly grows from the onset of irradiation, suggesting that there is no minimal ‘safe’ dose that bone collagen can sustain. Ionization of calcium and phosphorous in the nanocrystals yields fluorescence and high energy electrons giving rise to structural damage that spreads beyond regions directly illuminated by the incident radiation. Our findings highlight photoelectrons as major agents of damage to bone collagen with implications to all situations where bones are irradiated by hard X-rays and in particular for small-beam mineralized collagen fiber investigations.
Weniger anzeigenInfluenza A virus (IAV) causes pandemics and annual epidemics of severe respiratory infections. A better understanding of the molecular regulation in tissue and cells upon IAV infection is needed to thoroughly understand pathogenesis. We analyzed IAV replication and gene expression induced by IAV strain H3N2 Panama in isolated primary human alveolar epithelial type II cells (AECIIs), the permanent A549 adenocarcinoma cell line, alveolar macrophages (AMs) and explanted human lung tissue by bulk RNA sequencing. Primary AECII exhibit in comparison to AM a broad set of strongly induced genes related to RIG-I and interferon (IFN) signaling. The response of AECII was partly mirrored in A549 cells. In human lung tissue, we observed induction of genes unlike in isolated cells. Viral RNA was used to correlate host cell gene expression changes with viral burden. While relative induction of key genes was similar, gene abundance was highest in AECII cells and AM, while weaker in the human lung (due to less IAV replication) and A549 cells (pointing to their limited suitability as a model). Correlation of host gene induction with viral burden allows a better understanding of the cell-type specific induction of pathways and a possible role of cellular crosstalk requiring intact tissue.
Weniger anzeigenDeep brain stimulation (DBS) to the fornix is an investigational treatment for patients with mild Alzheimer’s Disease. Outcomes from randomized clinical trials have shown that cognitive function improved in some patients but deteriorated in others. This could be explained by variance in electrode placement leading to differential engagement of neural circuits. To investigate this, we performed a post-hoc analysis on a multi-center cohort of 46 patients with DBS to the fornix (NCT00658125, NCT01608061). Using normative structural and functional connectivity data, we found that stimulation of the circuit of Papez and stria terminalis robustly associated with cognitive improvement (R = 0.53, p < 0.001). On a local level, the optimal stimulation site resided at the direct interface between these structures (R = 0.48, p < 0.001). Finally, modulating specific distributed brain networks related to memory accounted for optimal outcomes (R = 0.48, p < 0.001). Findings were robust to multiple cross-validation designs and may define an optimal network target that could refine DBS surgery and programming.
Weniger anzeigenBackground: Impairments in speech production are a core symptom of non-affective psychosis (NAP). While traditional clinical ratings of patients’ speech involve a subjective human factor, modern methods of natural language processing (NLP) promise an automatic and objective way of analyzing patients’ speech. This study aimed to validate NLP methods for analyzing speech production in NAP patients.
Methods: Speech samples from patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were obtained at two measurement points, 6 months apart. Out of N = 71 patients at T1, speech samples were also available for N = 54 patients at T2. Global and local models of semantic coherence as well as different word embeddings (word2vec vs. GloVe) were applied to the transcribed speech samples. They were tested and compared regarding their correlation with clinical ratings and external criteria from cross-sectional and longitudinal measurements.
Results: Results did not show differences for global vs. local coherence models and found more significant correlations between word2vec models and clinically relevant outcome variables than for GloVe models. Exploratory analysis of longitudinal data did not yield significant correlation with coherence scores.
Conclusion: These results indicate that natural language processing methods need to be critically validated in more studies and carefully selected before clinical application.

Yet, it remains unknown what specific post elements people pay attention to and whether this varies depending on how they access social media newsfeeds. In an eye-tracking experiment among university students (N = 201), we compare user attention to specific post elements like source, title, or picture, in a dynamic Facebook newsfeed by device (desktop vs. mobile) and smartphone usage environment (private vs. public). Significant attentional differences occur at the level of the newsfeed post elements. Users pay less attention to visual information on the mobile newsfeed and more attention to textual post elements in a public setting.
Weniger anzeigenTetrapyridyl-functionalized phosphinines were prepared and structurally characterized. The donor-functionalized aromatic phosphorus heterocycles react highly selectively and even reversibly with water. Calculations reveal P,N-cooperativity for this process, with the flanking pyridyl groups serving to kinetically enhance the formal oxidative addition process of H2O to the low-coordinate phosphorus atom via H-bonding. Subsequent tautomerization forms 1,2-dihydrophosphinine derivatives, which can be quantitatively converted back to the phosphinine by applying vacuum, even at room temperature. This process can be repeated numerous times, without any sign of decomposition of the phosphinine. In the presence of CuI·SMe2, dimeric species of the type ([Cu2I2(phosphinine)]2) are formed, in which each phosphorus atom shows the less common μ2-bridging 2e−-lone-pair-donation to two Cu(I)-centres. Our results demonstrate that fully unsaturated phosphorus heterocycles, containing reactive P[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bonds, are interesting candidates for the activation of E–H bonds, while the aromaticity of such compounds plays an appreciable role in the reversibility of the reaction, supported by NICS calculations.
Weniger anzeigenCompounds containing Mn–O bonds are of utmost importance in biological systems and catalytic processes. Nevertheless, mononuclear manganese complexes containing all O-donor ligands are still rare. Taking advantage of the low tendency of the pentafluoroorthotellurate ligand (teflate, OTeF5) to bridge metal centers, we have synthesized two homoleptic manganese complexes with monomeric structures and an all O-donor coordination sphere. The tetrahedrally distorted MnII anion, [Mn(OTeF5)4]2−, can be described as a high spin d5 complex (S = 5/2), as found experimentally (magnetic susceptibility measurements and EPR spectroscopy) and using theoretical calculations (DFT and CASSCF/NEVPT2). The high spin d4 electronic configuration (S = 2) of the MnIII anion, [Mn(OTeF5)5]2−, was also determined experimentally and theoretically, and a square pyramidal geometry was found to be the most stable one for this complex. Finally, the bonding situation in both complexes was investigated by means of the Interacting Quantum Atoms (IQA) methodology and compared to that of hypothetical mononuclear fluoromanganates. Within each pair of [MnXn]2− (n = 4, 5) species (X = OTeF5, F), the Mn–X interaction is found to be comparable, therefore proving that the similar electronic properties of the teflate and the fluoride are also responsible for the stabilization of these unique species.
