Mathematical Science Communication: A Study and a Case Study

Abstract

This thesis deals with the theory and practice of mathematical science communication. First, we give an overview of the developments in general science communication research. This is necessary to provide a basis on which we analyze the very scarce literature on mathematical science communication. Subsequently, we develop a terminology of goals, methods, and motivation of science communication in mathematics.

A further focus is on the case study POLYTOPIA ? Adoptiere ein Polyeder. This project on informal learning of mathematics creates an access to mathematics on the relational level. The many decisions on design, structure and content of the project are reflected upon, and the results of the user survey are presented descriptively. Furthermore, we examine the references to the didactical methods that underlie both the project design as a whole and the associated school material.

Mathematics, which is the foundation of the project, is illuminated from three sides. First, we trace the development of the concept of polyhedra in a historical perspective. Then we define the mathematical concepts needed in the project and describe their application. The third perspective is a summary of the results of Dürer's conjecture: the question whether each polyhedron can be unfolded into a non-overlapping net.

In this thesis links these four areas of research. This forms a fundamental basis for establishing mathematical science communication as an independent field of science and sets an agenda for its further development.

Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Theorie und Praxis von mathematischer Wissenschaftskommunikation. Zunächst geben wir eine Übersicht über die Entwicklungen der allgemeinen Wissenschaftskommunikationsforschung. Dies ist notwendig, um eine Grundlage zu schaffen anhand derer wir die sehr spärlich vorhandene Literatur zu mathematischer Wissenschaftskommunikation analysieren. Nachfolgend entwickeln wir eine Terminologie der Ziele, Methoden und Motivation von Wissenschaftskommunikation im Fach Mathematik. Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf der auf der Fallstudie Polytopia – Adoptiere ein Polyeder. Dieses Projekt zum informellen Lernen von Mathematik schafft einen Zugang zur Mathematik auf der Beziehungsebene. Die vielen Entscheidungen über Design, Aufbau und Inhalt des Projektes werden reflektiert, die Ergebnisse der Nutzer*innenbefragung werden deskriptiv dargestellt. Weiter beleuchten wir die Bezüge zu den didaktischen Methoden, die einerseits dem Projektdesign insgesamt und andererseits dem dazugehörigen Schulmaterial zugrunde liegen. Die Mathematik, die das Fundament für das Projekt bildet, wird von drei Seiten beleuchtet. Zunächst vollziehen wir die Entwicklung des Begriffs des Polyeders in einer historischen Perspektive nach. Dann definieren wir die im Projekt benötigten mathematischen Konzepte und beschreiben ihre Anwendung. Die dritte Perspektive ist eine Zusammenfassung über die Ergebnisse zu Dürers Vermutung. So wird die Frage bezeichnet, ob jedes Polyeder in ein überschneidungsfreies Netz zerlegt werden kann. In dieser Arbeit werden Verbindungen zwischen diesen vier Bereichen geschaffen. Damit wird eine fundamentale Grundlage zur Etablierung der mathematischen Wissenschaftskommunikation als ein unabhängiges Wissenschaftsfeld gelegt und eine Agenda für ihre die weitere Entwicklung aufgesetzt.
