In this thesis, the chemistry of hypervalent organic iodine compounds in the oxidation states +III and +V were studied. Mainly focussing on the synthesis of triaryl- and pentaaryliodine with electron withdrawing groups, the synthesis of the unknown iodine tribromide and its aryl derivative was also aspired. Iodine(III)compounds The synthesis of a variety of aryliodine difluorides and -dichlorides (Ar = p-CF3C6H4, p-FC6H4, p-SF5C6H4 und 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3) was successful. All compounds were characterised by NMR- spectroscopy and in all cases with para-substituted phenyl ligands single crystals could be obtained. All of these molecules have a t-shaped geometry. All efforts to synthesize iodine tribromide were not successful. During the reaction, the formation of a deep yellow solid could be observed. All crystallisation attempts failed, due to the spontaneous decomposition under gas formation during the solvating process. Instead of the analogous aryl compound, single crystals of [p-CF3C6H4IFCl]2•Br2 were obtained. The thermally unstable (p-CF3C6H4)3I which already decomposes in solution at temperatures above -40 °C was successfully synthesized and characterised by low temperature NMR-experiments and the structure was determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction experiments. In accordance with the model of hypervalent molecules by Musher an elongation of the axial carbon-iodine-bonds is observed. Iodine(V)compounds The reaction of ArIO2 with sulphur tetrafluoride leads to the formation of the corresponding aryliodinetetrafluorides. By treating p-CF3C6H4IO2 with hydrofluoric acid (40 %) the formation of p-CF3C6H4IOF2 is observed. The possibility of (p-CF3C6H4)3I, p-CF3C6H4IOF2 and p-CF3C6H4IF4 for being suitable precursors for the formation of pentaaryliodine was investigated. The triaryliodine compound can be fluorinated at low temperatures with Xenondifluoride with the addition of catalytic amounts of tetraethylammonium chloride. The formation of an isomeric product mixture of cis- and trans- (p-CF3C6H4)3IF2 in a ratio of 1:2.5 could be observed. Furthermore p-CF3C6H4IOF2 does not react with p-CF3C6H4Li to give the corresponding triaryliodine oxide. This shows that these two routes are wrong turns and not suitable for the synthesis of the pentaaryliodine. At low temperatures, no reaction of p-CF3C6H4SiF3, (p-CF3C6H4)3B or p-CF3C6H4IBF2 with p-CF3C6H4IF4 occurs, whereas the reaction of p-CF3C6H4IF4 with the last mentioned phenylating reagent leads at room temperature to the formation of [(p-CF3C6H4)2IF2][BF4]. This compound is stable at room temperature but highly sensitive towards hydrolysis. Nevertheless, the compound was characterised by NMR-spectroscopy and single crystal x-ray diffraction. The usage of even more powerful phenylating reagents like (p-CF3C6H4)2Zn or p-CF3C6H4Li lead to the formation of colourless solids. The dried solids tended to decompose violently even at temperatures of -78 °C. The DFT calculations of the decomposition of the pentaaryliodine into the triaryliodine and biphenyl confirm that the decomposition is very exothermic, eventually the pentaaryliodine was obtained.
