His work offers a comprehensive description of the known world as well as insight into the practice of scholarly geography during the second century CE. Ptolemy’s most important innovation in this field was his use of geographical coordinates to create maps of the world, and his catalogue, with its latitudes and longitudes of thousands of localities, is one of our most valuable sources on the antique oikoumenē. Very little is known, however, about the sources and working methods that Ptolemy employed to produce his Geography. This book focuses on Ptolemy’s description of the Iberian peninsula and examines two problematic and interlinked topics relating to the origins of the catalogue of localities: Ptolemy’s sources and scientific methods on the one hand, and the textual transmission of the Geography, from Ptolemy to the extant manuscripts, on the other.; Klaudios Ptolemaios verfasste seine Geographie in Alexandria, einer Stadt, die zu den bedeutendsten wissenschaftlichen Zentren des römischen Reiches zählte. Sein Werk bietet nicht nur eine umfangreiche Beschreibung der bekannten Welt sondern auch einen Einblick in die gelehrte Geographie und Kartographie des 2. Jahrhunderts unserer Zeit. Die wichtigste Innovation des Ptolemaios auf diesem Gebiet bestand in der Verwendung geographischer Koordinaten, um Karten zu erstellen. Sein Katalog, der die Breiten und Längen von tausenden von Orten enthält, ist eine unserer wertvollsten Quellen zur antiken oikoumenē. Über die Quellen und Arbeitsmethoden, die Ptolemaios verwendet hat, um seine Geographie anzufertigen, wissen wir jedoch sehr wenig. Um die Genese seines Ortskatalogs nachzuvollziehen, wird im vorliegenden Buch Ptolemaios’ Beschreibung der iberischen Halbinsel unter zwei miteinander verknüpften Aspekten untersucht. Im Fokus stehen zum einen die Quellen und wissenschaftlichen Methoden des Ptolemaios, und zum anderen die Überlieferungsgeschichte seiner Geographie von deren Abfassung bis hin zur Entstehung der ältesten Handschriften.
