This thesis presents the experimental characterization of a dinuclear spin-crossover (SCO) molecule and compares it to its mononuclear parent complex. For the first time, the dinuclear molecule was fabricated as a thin film using the pulsed layer injection (PLI) technique. To investigate the SCO-properties of the thin-film and bulk samples, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), far-infrared spectroscopy (FIR), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy were employed. The scope of this thesis was to assess the feasibility of fabricating a thin film of a dinuclear SCO molecule on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) using PLI, while preserving its SCO capabilities, and to characterize the molecule. In the first part of the thesis, dinuclear thin film samples were fabricated using PLI, along with dropcast and bulk-powder samples of the same molecule, and characterized by XAS. The thermal and light-induced SCO characteristics were compared to those of the parent complex. The second part of the thesis investigates the vibrational and electronic structures of both SCO molecules using FIR and EPR spectroscopy. With the aid of density functional theory (DFT), individual molecular vibrations were assigned to the SCO behavior of each molecule under temperature change and light irradiation. Although the theoretical modeling of the EPR data is still ongoing, the results presented here provide initial insights into the electronic structure of both molecules under light irradiation at 10 K.
