Abstract:
Critical archaeology is applied archaeology. Critical archaeology is an archaeology that helps the community of citizens make decisions in their best interest. Such an archaeology is applied in the sense that it is used to give answers to some of the big issues to be addressed in contemporary society. Applied archaeology provides tangible benefits and thus becomes an indispensable part of society. As a short example I briefly discuss a new project on applying archaeological knowledge to the problem of how to communicate the dangers of nuclear waste disposal sites across very long time-spans of 100,000 years or more. Applied archaeology is important because it is critical to society!
