This research examines biopolitics, its knowledges and language, during the first half of the twentieth century in Costa Rica. The main proposal is that the social mediation of intellectuals and literature, within biopolitical knowledge, produces a narrative transformation, which is noticeable in the internal metaphors of biopower, political language and literary contents. Biopolitics has a corporeal history and comprises, as an incursion of the biologic into the government of life and populations, a group of knowledges that intervene the bodies. Literature is a knowledge and, due to its participation in the popularization of scientific knowledge, is part of biopolitics—it reproduces, criticizes and completes its epistemology. The mediation between biopolitics and literature creates two metaphors of power: the hero and the monster, given that writers supply a functional knowledge of classical culture. The metaphor is both linguistic expression and social reality; the heroic and the monstrous are an experienced discourse within the practices of knowledge, politics and bodies. These premises are developed by analyzing the components of biopower such as statistical, medical and hygienic knowledge and their repercussion on bodies and by looking at diverse expressions of the corporeality: the healthy, sick, deformed or monstrous. Next, the role of literature within that biopolitical knowledge is explored drawing on the mediation of writers to disseminate science through their magazines, literary works and cultural as well as political organizations. To that end, the case of three writers is employed: Joaquín García Monge, through which the transnational flow of biopolitcal knowledges and metaphors is observed; Carmen Lyra, with whom the relationship of women with biopower and the changeover from an aesthetics of a vulnerable body to the biopolitical agenda of communism are distinguished; and Carlos Luis Fallas, who evidences the biopolitical contrast between interior and periphery of the country and the transformation of the communist knowledge of bodies and space into a novel that operates as biopolitical metaphor.","479 S.","https://refubium.fu-berlin.de/handle/fub188/9560||http://dx.doi.org/10.17169/refubium-13759","urn:nbn:de:kobv:188-fudissthesis000000095245-8","spa","http://www.fu-berlin.de/sites/refubium/rechtliches/Nutzungsbedingungen","Biopolitics||Body||Metaphor||Monster||Hero","900 Geschichte und Geografie","Criaturas de lo heroico y lo monstruoso","Metáforas del saber biopolítico y sus cuerpos (Costa Rica, 1900-1946)","Heroic and Monstrous Creatures","Metaphors of the Biopolitical Knowledge and its Bodies (Costa Rica, 1900-1946)","Dissertation","free","open access","Text","Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften","FUDISS_derivate_000000014408","FUDISS_thesis_000000095245"
