The cumulation of γ-hexachlorocyclohexane in various tissues as a function of the application Lindane continues to play a worldwide role in wood preservation and pesticides. Its use was banned in Germany at the end of 2007. In spite of this, even here in Germany, the burden of remaining supplies or contaminated products is still present. Since Lindane is distributed globally, exposure to it is unavoidable (for example, from loaded textiles from the Far East, or treated cotton from the US), whether that be through contact with the skin or whether it is inhaled through the mouth or nose. Depending on the size of the dose, Lindane will be stored in different organs of the body. Particularly susceptible to this is tissue with a high triglyceride content, such as fat tissue in the skin or in intra-abdominal fat. Lindane accumulates less in the white and grey matter of the brain than it does in other parenchymatous organs. A high concentration of Lindane gathers in the spinal cord, the peripheral nerve tissues and in the optic nerve. This goes some way to explain neurological symptomatology. Lindane tends to accumulate in the skin and in the bone marrow. The latter can be a trigger for toxic effects and demonstrates a connection to the development of non-Hodgkin lymphomas, thrombocytopenia and panmyelophthisis. Lindane is not stored in the body indefinitely, but it can still be detected long after original exposure takes place. This study seeks to show whether a storage pattern can be identified in connection to the method of application so that subsequent consequences for safety in the work environment can be established. 18 test subjects were exposed to Lindane utilising oral and cutaneous methods. A differentiation was made between short and long-term exposure. When it was applied cutaneously, Lindane predominantly accumulated in the hair, followed by in fat-rich tissues. In test subjects who underwent short-term, oral exposure Lindane was mainly stored in fat-rich tissues (beneath the skin, in stomach fat and in nerve tissue). No storage pattern could be identified for those tested with long-term oral exposure, but Lindane tended towards storage in fat-rich tissues under these conditions. The main area of storage was fat-rich tissues, such as nerve tissue, regardless of the method of application and exposure. Even if Lindane is stored in fat-rich tissues in the highest concentration in the body, the concentrations, not the known ones, cause a neurotoxic effect in humans. The consequences for safety in the work environment are clear: prolonged exposure of the skin to Lindane and other fat soluble pesticides should be avoided as indeed should the occasional inhalation of large quantities of the substance.","75","https://refubium.fu-berlin.de/handle/fub188/7795||http://dx.doi.org/10.17169/refubium-11994","urn:nbn:de:kobv:188-fudissthesis000000025283-5","ger","http://www.fu-berlin.de/sites/refubium/rechtliches/Nutzungsbedingungen","γ-hexachlorocyclohexane||cumulation||application","600 Technik, Medizin, angewandte Wissenschaften::610 Medizin und Gesundheit","Die Kumulation von γ-Hexachlorcyclohexan in verschiedenen Geweben in Abhängigkeit von der Applikation","The cumulation of γ-hexachlorocyclohexane in various tissues as a function of the application","Dissertation","free","open access","Text","Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin","FUDISS_derivate_000000010043","FUDISS_thesis_000000025283"
