Since decades, the irradiation of eye tumours successfully performed with protons can be considered a high-precision therapy that is available only in a few numbers of institutions worldwide with scientific and/or clinical background. The widespread treatment planning programme Eyeplan was originally created for VAX and VMS operating workstations, where it is characterised by its sequential processing and inflexible computer model based on input data. Though the third generation of Eyeplan by now has been adapted to Windows operating systems, too, the programme has stuck to its traditional principles of planning that can be traced back to an era before computed tomography had been used for radiotherapy purposes. In the scope of the thesis presented here, a modern image-based planning programme has been developed to be fit for clinical operability and compared to the customary Eyeplan. Hence, this work has been devided into three consecutive parts: (I) Development of the new programme and its integration into the Berlin treatment facility, (II) Trial and verification of the complete treatment planning system during clinical operation and (III) Performance of image-based techniques in treatment planning of eye tumour therapy and intercomparison with the results derived from the usual planning procedure. The new treatment planning system Octopus is unique in the world and has been implemented for proton therapy in Berlin for the first time on May 29, 2006. Within the period up to July 2006 the system has been verified by the whole personnel specialised in proton therapy (radiotherapists, ophthalmologists, and medical physicists). By completing the technical documentation of the programme, the design and development project could be finished on December 20, 2006. In the year 2009, Octopus became the sole operating planning system for the Berlin treatment facility.","https://refubium.fu-berlin.de/handle/fub188/472||http://dx.doi.org/10.17169/refubium-4675","urn:nbn:de:kobv:188-fudissthesis000000104615-1","ger","http://www.fu-berlin.de/sites/refubium/rechtliches/Nutzungsbedingungen","proton therapy||eye tumor therapy||ocular tumor||uveal melanoma||image-based treatment planning system||EYEPLAN||OCTOPUS","600 Technik, Medizin, angewandte Wissenschaften::610 Medizin und Gesundheit","Einführung eines Therapieplanungssystems für die Protonentherapie von Augentumoren in die klinische Routine","Implementation to clinical practice of a treatment planning system for proton therapy of eye tumours","Dissertation","free","open access","Text","Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin","FUDISS_derivate_000000021414","FUDISS_thesis_000000104615"
