Polarization-modulation Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (PM-IRAS) is a surface-sensitive technique that can be applied to study in-situ single-crystal surfaces as well as supported nanoparticles in a pressure range from UHV to ambient conditions. Different heterogeneous catalytic systems were investigated in this work employing surface science techniques working under UHV, such as X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Low Energy Electron Diffraction, and PM-IRAS and Gas Chromatography to perform study at elevated pressure. PM-IRAS has been successfully applied to investigate the adsorption of CO on Pd model catalyst surfaces from UHV up to elevated pressures. PM-IRAS vibrational spectra of CO adsorbed on Pd(111) identified different adsorption sites (linear on-top, bridge, hollow). The transition from the bridging CO overlayer structure to the three-fold hollow/atop structure was also observed, in good agreement with previous studies. Initial results of elevated pressure CO adsorption on Pd/Al2O3/NiAl(110) have been reported, showing the applicability of PM-IRAS to study more complex catalytic systems under relevant conditions. Furthermore, PM-IRAS measurements on the CO/Pd systems confirmed that results obtained under UHV hold also under higher pressure, (i.e. no surface reconstruction or high pressure induced species have been observed under gtechnical h conditions). Methanol adsorption, decomposition and oxidation on Pd(111) and Pd/Al2O3/NiAl(110) were investigated under UHV and higher pressure in a wide temperature range between 100 and 550 K. For methanol decomposition on Pd model catalysts two reaction pathways could be identified: dehydrogenation and activation of the methanolic C-O bond. This second pathway led to the formation of carbon deposit under high pressure conditions. Pd(111) and alumina supported Pd clusters showed similar activity for methanol oxidation reaction at high pressure and temperature. Carbonaceous overlayers present during methanol oxidation might have favorably affected the reaction influencing the selectivity. Interestingly, XPS measurements suggested that the reaction took place on metallic Pd for Pd(111) single crystal, while Pd nanoparticles became partially oxidized. In addition, the interaction of ethylene and of 1,3-butadiene with Pd(111) have been investigated. Different adsorption geometries (di-s bonded C2H4, p-bonded C2H4, ethylidyne) have been spectroscopically detected during ethylene adsorption on Pd(111) under UHV and high pressure. Ethylene hydrogenation to ethane was followed under elevated pressure, showing that Pd(111) is an active catalyst for this reaction. Butadiene adsorption/desorption studies under UHV showed that C4H6 is highly stable on Pd(111) up to 500 K, while dehydrogenation occurred above this temperature.
