Möpse zeigen eine hohe Inzidenz an Hüftgelenksdysplasie.","In a prospective study using a selected cohort of 265 dogs of the brachycephalic races of French Bulldogs (n=199), English Bulldogs (n=12) and pug dogs (n=54) the frequency and localisation of vertebral column malformations were investigated. Further, any association of these malformations with the quantity and quality of neurological deficits was analysed. One group of animals of the study were patients of the clinic (81 animals; 31 %). 69 % (184/265) had been recruited as healthy animals from breeding associations. In line with literature data, the distribution maxima of the radiologically proven malformations were between T5 and T9 (French Bulldogs) and between T6 and T10 (English Bulldogs). There were rare vertebral column malformations in only 5,6 % (3/54) of the pug dogs. A total of 707 vertebral malformations occurred in the following order of frequency: 48 % (342) ventral wedge shape vertebra, 14 % (99) dorsal wedge shape vertebrae, 14 % (97) short vertebrae, 11 % (75) butterfly vertebrae, 7,9 % (56) dorsal hemivertebrae, 2,3 % (16) block vertebrae, 1,3 % (9) ventro-lateral wedge shape vertebrae, 1,1 % (8) lateral wedge shape vertebrae and 0,7 % (5) dorso-lateral hemivertebrae. In comparison with established literature data, the percentage of ventral wedge shape vertebrae is higher, whereas the frequency of butterfly vertebras is lower. In ventro-dorsal radiography of the vertebral column ventral wedge vertebras have a similar appearance to butterfly vertebras. In the present study this type of malformation was classified as wedge vertebra. For the first time in veterinary medicine nine ventro-lateral wedge shape vertebras were identified in this study. The correlation of vertebral malformations with the quantity and quality of neurological deficits (Frankel score) is in accordance with respective literature data. No significant correlation with neurological deficits was identified in any of the malformations described in this study with the exception of the ventro-lateral wedge shape vertebras and/or dorso-lateral hemivertebras (2 % of all found vertebral malformations). Significant correlations were established between the occurrence of neurological symptoms and vertebral column curvature (Cobb angle > 30°) and vertebral column stepping (> 1.75 mm), respectively. A significant association exists between high-grade deformations of the tail and malformations of preceding parts of the vertebral column. The coincidence of vertebral malformations and hip dysplasia in English Bulldogs is very frequent and a coincidence of vertebral malformations and luxating patella was detected in French Bulldogs. There was a high incidence of hip dysplasia in pug dogs.","VIII, 107 Seiten","https://refubium.fu-berlin.de/handle/fub188/25389||http://dx.doi.org/10.17169/refubium-4093","urn:nbn:de:kobv:188-refubium-25389-8","ger","http://www.fu-berlin.de/sites/refubium/rechtliches/Nutzungsbedingungen","600 Technik, Medizin, angewandte Wissenschaften::630 Landwirtschaft::630 Landwirtschaft und verwandte Bereiche","dog||brachycephal||congenital abnormalities||bone diseases||radiography||spine||vertebral body||Cobb||neurological disorders","Kongenitale Wirbelkörpermalformationen bei Hunden brachycephaler Rassen","Congenital vertebral body malformations in brachycephalic dogs","Dissertation","free","open access","Text","Veterinärmedizin","Mensch und Buch Verlag"
