Approximately 25.000 doctorates are completed each year in Germany, about 25% in human medicine and about 4% in dentistry. Medical doctorates in particular are accused of quality loss due to grade inflation and inadequate national scientific standards. The high number of plagiarism cases is a source of public criticism. As a consequence, several expert committees and the medical faculties have called for reforms and started to initiate them. Despite the great public interest, the effects of these on the development of the quality of doctorates have so far not been adequately presented and analysed scientifically. Methods. Based on a retrospective PubMed research conducted by all doctoral students of the Charité Berlin in 1998, 2004 and 2008, the publication performance of the doctoral candidates was examined using previously determined parameters (number of publications, journal-impact-factor, first and last authorships and doctoral grade). Results. The number of publications per doctoral candidate increased significantly from 1,28 to 2,03 over the 10-year period. The proportion of published doctoral candidates increased significantly from 1998 to 2008 to over 50% of the total year. The proportion of first authorships remained largely constant at over 23%, as well as the rate of last authorships at over 2%. Men always published more than women. The journal-impact-factor increased from 2,970 (1998) to 3,742 (2008). The 5-year-journal-impact-factor and after trend correction of the journal-impact-factor of the respective publications and their journals showed constant values without a statistically significant trend. The grade ""magna cum laude"" doubled significantly to 40,7% in 2008, mainly at the expense of the grade ""cum laude"". The redistribution to better doctoral grades correlated with the increased number of publications. Conclusion. Through constant reforms of the doctoral system, the Charité Berlin can report a positive development in the doctoral performance of its doctoral students within a decade, measured by the number of publications, the journal-impact-factor and the correlation of improved doctoral grades with an increased publication performance.","V, 47","https://refubium.fu-berlin.de/handle/fub188/24812||http://dx.doi.org/10.17169/refubium-2572","urn:nbn:de:kobv:188-refubium-24812-3","ger","http://www.fu-berlin.de/sites/refubium/rechtliches/Nutzungsbedingungen","600 Technik, Medizin, angewandte Wissenschaften::610 Medizin und Gesundheit::610 Medizin und Gesundheit","German doctoral system||quality of doctorates||Charité Berlin","Qualität der Promotionen an der Charité Berlin über einen Zeitraum von 10 Jahren","Dissertation","free","open access","Text","Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin"
