They will accept lower sector wages in order to discourage mobile firms from leaving the country. Since such wages are independent of the workers' domestic outside opportunities, wage moderation - induced by deeper economic integration - creates leeway for the government to engage in redistributive policies even if this improves the workers' domestic outside options. Only if the latter become suffciently attractive will redistribution induce some offshoring, and it is only at that level that further economic integration will lead to both wage moderation and offshoring activities. Therefore, our analysis suggests that rather than provoking a downsizing of the welfare state, offshoring defines an upper limit for the generosity of the welfare state below which redistribution becomes less instead of more distortive.","33 S.","978-3-941240-08-7","https://refubium.fu-berlin.de/handle/fub188/19916||http://dx.doi.org/10.17169/FUDOCS_document_000000004029","eng","urn:nbn:de:kobv:188-fudocsseries000000000313-4||urn:nbn:de:kobv:188-fudocsseries000000000006-7","http://www.fu-berlin.de/sites/refubium/rechtliches/Nutzungsbedingungen","offshoring||import competition||wage bargaining||oligopoly||redistribution","300 Sozialwissenschaften::330 Wirtschaft::331 Arbeitsökonomie||300 Sozialwissenschaften::330 Wirtschaft::336 Öffentliche Finanzen||300 Sozialwissenschaften::330 Wirtschaft::339 Makroökonomie und verwandte Themen","Welfare policy in the presence of unionised labour and internationally mobile firms","Buch","open access","Volkswirtschaftslehre:::46a887cb-f472-42ae-a213-041a9fcecf17:::0","Wirtschaftswissenschaft","FUDOCS_derivate_000000000764","FUDOCS_document_000000004029","2009,14 : Economics","Diskussionsbeiträge des Fachbereichs Wirtschaftswissenschaft der Freien Universität Berlin"
