Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at the nitrogen K-edge of para- aminobenzoic acid reveal both pH- and solvent-dependent variations in the ionisation potential (IP), 1s→π* resonances and HOMO–LUMO gap. These changes unequivocally identify the chemical species (neutral, cationic or anionic) present in solution. It is shown how this incisive chemical state sensitivity is further enhanced by the possibility of quantitative bond length determination, based on the analysis of chemical shifts in IPs and σ* shape resonances in the NEXAFS spectra. This provides experimental access to detecting even minor variations in the molecular structure of solutes in solution, thereby providing an avenue to examining computational predictions of solute properties and solute–solvent interactions.","8 S.","48466","https://refubium.fu-berlin.de/handle/fub188/16783||http://dx.doi.org/10.17169/refubium-20964","eng","http://olabout.wiley.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-406241.html#OnlineOpen_Terms","500 Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik::540 Chemie||500 Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik::530 Physik","Chemical Speciation and Bond Lengths of Organic Solutes by Core-Level Spectroscopy","pH and Solvent Influence on p-Aminobenzoic Acid","Wissenschaftlicher Artikel","open access","Chemistry - A European Journal. - 21 (2015), 19, S. 7256-7263","10.1002/chem.201405635","http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/chem.201405635","09476539","Institut für Experimentalphysik:::0e15dd66-95f1-40d5-8307-e68203f86a76:::600","Physik","FUDOCS_derivate_000000005972","FUDOCS_document_000000023880","no"
