Copepodid development and reproduction of calanoid and cyclopoid copepods feeding on algivorous and bacterivorous ciliates were proven in laboratory experiments. Algivorous ciliates as Urotricha farcta and Coleps sp. provide a faster copepodid development respectively a higher frequency of egg production for many copepod species (Eudiaptomus graciloides, E. gracilis, Mesocylops leuckarti, Cyclops vicinus, C. abyssorum) than bacterivorous ciliates as Tetrahymena pyriformes, Colpidium campylum und Cyclidium sp. do. Thermocylops oithonoides developed to maturity feeding on bacterivorous Cyclidium but not on algivorous Urotricha. The grazing pressure of E. graciloides, T. oithonoides, copepodids of several Cyclopoidea and natural mesozooplankton communities on an ambient high abundant (250 cells/mL) ciliate population was tested in situ in a microaerobic deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) in a mesotrophic lake. Ciliates were significantly depleted by all tested copepods with exception of T. oithonoides. A positive selection was correlated with ciliate cell size. Co-dominant long filamented (100-300 µm) cyanobacteria were significantly depleted by all tested copepods but not by rotifers. An increasing concentration of cyanobacteria during seasonal succession with increasing legth of filaments had a negative impact on the ingestion rates of cyclopoid copepodites, but not of E. graciloides. Highest ingestion rates for ciliates as well as for filamentous cyanobacteria were found for adult females of E. graciloides. The long chained cyanobacteria filaments were widely protected against the grazing of cyclopoid copepodids when they occurred in higher concentrations. Cyclopoid copepodites and rotifers are more tolerant against oxygen deficiency and stay constantly in the DCM and have a negative effect upon ciliates. The results from laboratory grazing experiments with E. graciloides feeding on ciliates at different O2 saturations showed no impairment of ingestion up to a lower saturation of 5 %. In the treatments with an O2 saturation of 2 % all copepods died within 1 hour. E. graciloides is able to use the DCM as food source in the beginning phase, when O2 saturation is higher than 2 %. With increasing O2 depletion only a restricted utilization from the upper oxygen richer water layers is possible with short term residence in the microaerobic DCM. DCM with associated high ciliate abundances in stratified lakes are an attractive food source for copepods, but are protected against unrestricted exploitation by O2 deficiency.","https://refubium.fu-berlin.de/handle/fub188/1673||http://dx.doi.org/10.17169/refubium-5875","urn:nbn:de:kobv:188-fudissthesis000000002625-6","ger","http://www.fu-berlin.de/sites/refubium/rechtliches/Nutzungsbedingungen","copepodid development||copepodid reproduction||deep chlorophyll maximum||ciliate grazing","500 Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik::570 Biowissenschaften; Biologie::570 Biowissenschaften; Biologie","Die Bedeutung von Ciliaten für die Juvenilentwicklung und Reproduktion von Copepoden sowie ihre trophischen Interaktionen im Tiefenchlorophyllmaximum eines mesotrophen Sees","The role of ciliates for juvenile development and reproduction of copepods and their trophic interactions in the deep chlorophyll maximum of a mesotrophic lake","Dissertation","free","open access","Text","Biologie, Chemie, Pharmazie","FUDISS_derivate_000000002625","FUDISS_thesis_000000002625","http://www.diss.fu-berlin.de/2007/123/"
