Dies zu dokumentieren ist das Hauptanliegen dieser Untersuchung.","Abstract Considering the development of the African Continent, the idea of Westernization appears at best as partially grounded. In order to describe the realities of Black societies involved in a long term structural transformation in an appropriate way, one should revert to the concept of ambivalent social change. This concept is adapted for the collection of data related to the articulation of modes of production. In addition, it makes clear that it is useful to adopt Amalgam and Hybridization as central categories in the analysis of African societies. It accordingly becomes possible to break with the dichotomy which has been marking the debate around tradition and modern age for a long time. The binary (Either Or) approach that traces back to works of classical social theorists such as Tönnies, Durkheim, Max Weber and T. Parsons is henceforth to be replaced by a historic-dialectical perspective. There are at least two reasons for doing so: (1) One does justice to those classical social theorists who have analytically always made a clear distinction between ideal and actual types by pointing out that the experiential reality is characterized by impure or mixed types. (2) One achieves that the systemic hybridism of African societies gets hermeneutically accessible. Against this background, the present study constitutes an attempt to unmistakably emphasize the following thesis: The adoption of foreign cultural elements here those considered as belonging to the Western World doesn t necessarily imply Westernization but it leads to ideological negotiation processes. Thereby it produces hybrid forms of cooperation and rejection. Focusing on key issues such as Land, Labor, Household and Titlehood or Social Eminent Positions in a lineage society in Cameroon, this investigation tries to show that what one commonly and simplistically refers to as Westernization is strictly speaking a complex and multifarious phenomenon. The ascertained dynamics of change suggests that microcosmic societies deploy enormous adaption efforts but at the same time refuse to entirely give up their ideologies, symbols and ways of creating economic values. These societies namely have a resistance potential which is often ignored. Yet, one should neither over- nor underestimate the resistance capacity of such societies. The challenge ultimately consists in stressing that the social change in this part of the World corresponds to an ambivalent process where competing cosmogonies can alernately experience converging and diverging trajectories. Whoever overlooks or downplays the refractiveness and the adaptiveness of local cosmogonies disqualifies himself from contributing to a creative and constructive behaviours handling in the african context. For he oftentimes faces heads of macrocosmic entities who still incline to dead pronounced behaviours or such considered as hindering. Regrettably, Frenetic modernization partisans as well as romantic tradition supporters usually fail to include discrepancies viewed as characteristic traits in their argumentation. Both camps prefere logics that are hostile to differentiation as far as social change is concerned. Now, a differentiated look at social change in Africa is imperatively needed and doubtless helpful. It s that conviction which motivates the present investigation. Its main objective is to empirically forbear from onesided views and to point out structural ambivalences closely connected with social change processes.","https://refubium.fu-berlin.de/handle/fub188/11521||http://dx.doi.org/10.17169/refubium-15719","urn:nbn:de:kobv:188-2005000816","fre","http://www.fu-berlin.de/sites/refubium/rechtliches/Nutzungsbedingungen","AMBIVALENCES||LAND||HOUSEHOLD||GENDER||TITLEHOOD","300 Sozialwissenschaften::300 Sozialwissenschaften, Soziologie::300 Sozialwissenschaften","Ambivalences de la dynamique d'incorporation structurelle en Afrique Noire","Une étude à la lumière de la chefferie Nso dans le Nord-Ouest du Cameroun","Ambivalences of the dynamics of structural incorporation in Black Africa","An empirical study","Dissertation","free","open access","Text","Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften","FUDISS_derivate_000000001698","FUDISS_thesis_000000001698","http://www.diss.fu-berlin.de/2005/81/"
